Johnson Fires Back at D’Annunzio on Questions of Tea Party Support, Voting Record

|

Concord, North Carolina (June 18, 2010). Today, Harold Johnson, Republican Candidate for the 8th Congressional District, fired back against what he called a “pattern of lies and deception” from his opponent Tim D’Annunzio.

Recent radio and internet ads paid for by Tim D’Annunzio for Congress and approved by D’Annunzio have made wild accusations about Harold Johnson, all of which have been refuted by media reports and Johnson himself.  Among the most recent accusations in a D’Annunzio internet ad is an accusation that Johnson lied about receiving Tea Party endorsements. Additionally, D’Annunzio has been airing an ad that falsely states that Johnson has never voted prior to this election.

“Haven’t we had enough of this yet?”, said Johnson. “Throughout this campaign, we’ve seen his anger, pattern of lies and deception.  Everytime he’s made an accusation against me, it has been proven false but he keeps trying and each time his lies become more ridiculous.  He’s poured over $1.3 million into this race to try to smear my name and guess what – it isn’t working! Voters know which one of us is telling the truth.”

In May, Johnson proudly announced endorsements from several Tea Party leaders including:

  • Craig Nannini, Charlotte Tea Party organizer;
  • Rev. Russ Fincham, Richmond County Tea Party Patriots;
  • Corey Thompson, Co-Founder of CAUTION (“Common Americans United To Inspire OUR Nation”), Tea Party activist, and candidate for Mecklenburg County Commission At Large;
  • Tariq Bokhari, Charlotte Political Activist and Tea Party Organizer;
  • Kristie Chapman, Tea Party speaker and conservative blogger; and
  • Lori Stadler, Former Communications Chairwoman for We the People of Cabarrus County, a group that endorsed D’Annunzio prior to the May 4th primary.

Since that time, Jack Oldham of the Union County Patriots has pledged his support to Johnson as well.

In a recent statement to the media, the leaders of four major Tea Party groups in the region, Jordan Bowman of We The People of Stanly County along with Jack Oldham, Craig Nannini, and Rev. Russ Fincham expressed support for Harold Johnson and sought to distance themselves from the D’Annunzio campaign. The statement (attached) reads:

“We are the leaders of the only real Tea Party groups in the counties of Stanly, Union, Mecklenburg and Richmond and wish to state that Tim D’Annunzio is not the choice of nor has he been endorsed by our Tea Parties.  D’Annunzio claims that he is the Tea Party candidate which we assert is not true in our counties and publicly state herein.  His claims to be the Tea Party candidate as a result his endorsement from 2 Tea Parties, one organized by himself and his friends and the other one in Cabarrus County organized by a paid member of his campaign staff.  In effect, he claims to be the Tea Party candidate solely based on support from his own Tea Parties.  Each one of us, leaders for our Tea Parties, personally support Harold Johnson in the US House District 8 runoff election and we encourage everyone within the District to please go out and vote for Harold Johnson this Tuesday, June 22.”

Additionally, D’Annunzio ads accuse Johnson of only voting in one election – while records show Johnson has been a consistent voter since he registered in 1968.  His full voting record is available from the State Board of Elections and includes his complete voting history in both Cabarrus and Iredell counties.  Further, News 14 Carolina has also examined both campaign’s ads and found that the Johnson ads have been factual while claims made by D’Annunzio are deliberate misrepresentations.  The News 14 story can be seen at: http://charlotte.news14.com/content/politics/627211/8th-district-gop-campaign-ads-raise-questions

Responding to the outrageous claims, Johnson said “Look, I have thick skin. Tim isn’t going to hurt me with his wild accusations. This election is about helping the people decide who will be best able to represent their interests in Washington. If you can’t tell the truth, you aren’t the right man for this job.”
