Santorum Wins Local Tea Party Group’s Straw Poll
By Sharon Hudson
In a presidential straw poll vote taken Monday night at a meeting of the local Tea Party group Common Americans United to Inspire OUR Nation (CAUTION), the results were as follows:
17 – Rick Santorum
8 – Mitt Romny
6 – Ron Paul
3 – Newt Gingrich
3 - Not designated
“Wow – I didn’t see that coming,” said one Santorum supporter who wished to remain unnamed. “As the candidate pool has dwindled, more people are taking a second look at Rick Santorum, and they like what they see,” said another participant.
CAUTION meets every Monday night from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Dilworth
Neighborhood Grille, 911 East Morehead Street, Suite 200, Charlotte NC 28204. Find out more at www.proceedwithcaution.us.

Two weeks ago, CAUTION took a presidential straw poll and Gingrich was the overwhelming winner. We decided to conduct the poll weekly to gauge the changing impressions of the membership as the campaigns continue fighting it out.
As a weekly meeting, we also benefit from a different mix of folks every week. It’s interesting to watch the swings within our own little piece of electorate. To think this is occuring nationwide….it’s pretty fascinating.

As a follow-up, it appears likely that Sen. Santorum will claim a victory in the Missouri “beauty contest” (where Speaker Gingrich is not on the ballot) and in the Minnesota caucus today.
All the attempted coronation of Gov. Romney appears to be a bit premature.

Yes, good news in the sense that the corrination has been halted. Watching Romney’s speech last night was awkward. It was a great speech and I agreed with the talking points, but fear he has no credibility in actually following through.

“As the candidate pool has dwindled, more people are taking a second look at Rick Santorum, and they like what they see,” said another participant.
Liking what they see, huh? What part of Santorum’s record are they coming around on? His support for No Child Left Behind? Medicare Part D? His vote against the National Right to Work bill? Or maybe his voting to raise the debt ceiling 5 times?
Considering that the Tea Party movement got kicked off over concerns about bailouts and especially gargantuan debt, I’m curious to know what part of Santorum’s abysmal record on the debt this Tea Party group is drawn to.

Agreed Adam. The only real difference in my eyes between Romney, Santorum, and Gingrich is personality and style. Substantively, I don’t really see many policy differences. That is why the negative campaigning has focused on the foolishness of ex wives and tax returns. Santorum is benefiting from generally remaining free of the “muck” on the campaign trail…at least compared to the other two.
In my opinion, far too many people simply completely discount Paul…which is unfortunate.

romney continues to lose support while dr. paul has gained support.out on the street the only one who is getting any buzz is ron paul.
it’s continues to amaze that so many folks in the gop refuse to consider a sound constitutional platform.from amongst paul supporters i read, many will never compromise principle for the same old bait and switch.

GAG. First Newt now Santorum – both are the antithesis of what I admired and assumed the tea party stood for. Makes me glad I didn’t full on join up – good thing Libertarians are “non-joiners”…

Did each Santorum supporter name the family member they would most like to see die in a war with Iran?
