The Case Against HOT Lanes
Grassroots organization WidenI77.org sponsored a public forum last night at the Cornelius Town Hall to discuss the state’s current plan for widening I-77 through the Lake Norman area using HOT, or high occupancy toll lanes.
Well over 125 were in attendance and their ranks included concerned citizens, elected officials, and employees of the NC Department of Transportation.
The presentation given by activist Kurt Naas (who submitted this letter to PunditHouse last October) outlined the groups objections to the use of HOT lanes as a solution to North Mecklenburg’s traffic woes.

This is the same NCDOT that built the south leg of I-485, which was out of date before the first vehicle ever drove on it.

The same NCDOT that designed the ridiculous I-485/I-85 interchange in western Mecklenburg County, where all that traffice is funneled from three lanes to one and merges onto south I-85 right before trucks enter a weigh station one mile down the road.

If this were I-880, I-680, I-580, I-5 or 101 in California, it would make sense.

In this case, it’s just plain stupid.
