My wife Robin and I are teachers in Charleston County, SC. I became a FairTax supporter in 1998 when I received a phone survey from FairTax.org on what I wanted in the tax code. Since we had to drain our savings for capital gains taxes on mutual funds to pay for a home improvement project, we were thrilled about the prospect of eliminating double-taxation! I became active in the FairTax movement in 2004, when then Rep. Jim DeMint became a co-sponsor of the FairTax Act and I became aware that FairTax needed to be a bottom-up movement to succeed. I starting working on the South Carolina FairTax Act in 2005 when I presented the plan to Speaker Bobby Harrell. It wasn't until 2009 that we were able to get the South Carolina FairTax Act introduced in the General Assembly by Rep. Rex Rice (R-Pickens). I firmly believe that ordinary people can effect change by embracing great ideas like the South Carolina FairTax Act and mobilizing like-minded people to contact their legislators!
