Stories written by Mark PellinAn award-winning journalist and former editor of The Rhinoceros Times in Charlotte, Pellin has been called everything from a misguided troglodyte to a professional agitator. He prefers the label of a realist, the guy in the crowd telling everybody that not only doesn’t the emperor have any clothes; he’s trying to steal ours.
Pellin has covered the Char-Meck scene for the better part of two decades, earning his fair share of fans and more than a few critics who wish he’d move to Nome, Alaska, and be eaten by wild bears.
When he’s not writing, he stays busy enjoying time with his wife and two kids. When he can break away for some R&R, he likes to fly fish (even if he doesn’t catch anything) and camp (even if it rains).

If at first you don’t succeed, move along and hope that extra support will help you catch up. That’s the philosophy critics contend is driving a new set of grade-promotion and graduation standards at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. The new rules, which take effect next school year, strongly encourage principals to not retain a student more than […]

The council approved a nearly $700,000 change-order to a construction contract with Edison […]

After months of political machinations and public theater resulting from a sexual harassment complaint that was never really a formal complaint filed against Councilmember Warren Turner, the Charlotte City Council on Monday night unanimously adopted a code of ethics and harassment policy to govern the council and mayor. The new policy, which includes guidelines on […]

An organized group of people waving signs and shouting slogans: the latest Tea Party rally? Nope, that would have generated plenty of media coverage, complete with the predictable, inflammatory and wholly inaccurate descriptions of angry, enraged and out-of-control protestors. In this case, which the mainstream media seems to have largely ignored, it was an unruly […]

If anybody needed proof positive that Charlotte-Mecklenburg’s criminal justice system is little but a revolving door, this week stands as damning evidence: Five homicides in five days and in almost every case the accused killers, as well as some of their victims, have extensive criminal records. Consider the most recent killing, where the body of […]

Attorneys for accused cop killer Demeatrius Montgomery have been trying to use the so-called Racial Justice Act to further delay his trail, which has already been lingering for years. The law allows judges to consider statistical evidence and data that suggests race was a factor in prosecutors seeking the death penalty on a disproportionate number […]

Leave it to the Democrat-controlled state Senate to pick right up where Gov. Bev Perdue left off, rolling out a budget that is filled with fantasy spending and does nothing to address the financial crisis North Carolina faces. Instead, the $19-billion monstrosity skirts any responsibility by pulling magic money from myriad hats, refusing to deal […]

Tuesday brought a round of electoral good news for folks whose faith had maybe begun to waver about ever breaking the stranglehold that the status quo has wrapped around politics. In several high-profile, closely-watched races, outsider candidates toppled entrenched incumbents. Rand Paul, a first-time candidate with deep roots in the Tea Party movement, defeated Kentucky’s […]
