Stories written by Mark PellinAn award-winning journalist and former editor of The Rhinoceros Times in Charlotte, Pellin has been called everything from a misguided troglodyte to a professional agitator. He prefers the label of a realist, the guy in the crowd telling everybody that not only doesn’t the emperor have any clothes; he’s trying to steal ours.
Pellin has covered the Char-Meck scene for the better part of two decades, earning his fair share of fans and more than a few critics who wish he’d move to Nome, Alaska, and be eaten by wild bears.
When he’s not writing, he stays busy enjoying time with his wife and two kids. When he can break away for some R&R, he likes to fly fish (even if he doesn’t catch anything) and camp (even if it rains).
With the May 4 primary election looming on the near horizon, if you haven’t already started digging into where the candidates stand, now is a good time. And we can’t think of a better place to begin than a recent survey the Campaign For Liberty sent to candidates for the U.S. House and U.S. Senate […]

Gotta love Gov. Bev’s math, or at least admire it for creativity. Perdue’s recommended state budget, released yesterday, prompted the obligatory headlines that focused on nearly $1-billion in savings proposed by the governor. The buzzword “slashed” was all the vogue. Odd thing, though, about those slashes: they result in a bottom-line spending increase of about […]

Talk of snatching $6.3 million from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools’ budget to help fill an overall county shortfall of $36 million in current-year funding has been floating for weeks. Commissioners made it official last night, when they unanimously approved the mid-year budget reduction. And despite recent howls that the fiscal correction would have dire consequence on CMS […]

Remember way back when Peter Gorman was hailed as an agent of change after being hired to helm Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, and even conservative naysayers like Commissioner Bill James expressed some degree of confidence in the new chief’s promises to break up the district’s bloated bureaucracy and right-size its fiscal ship. The cheers of optimism lasted […]

Teacher assistants, actually, about 164 of them, set to be fired under the budget recommendation the schools chief rolled out last night. That’s on top of up to 600 teachers and 250 other staff previously targeted for layoffs in Gorman’s proposed budget. Grand total: 1,030 jobs, along with eliminating magnet school bus stops, sidelining middle […]

Some called it “educational apartheid,” others “a return to segregation,” and regardless of the catch phrase they used, none were happy with Superintendent Peter Gorman’s initiative that will lump all of the district’s Title I schools into a newly created Central Zone learning community. Title I is educrat code for high-poverty, low-performing schools, the majority […]
