Stories written by Mark PellinAn award-winning journalist and former editor of The Rhinoceros Times in Charlotte, Pellin has been called everything from a misguided troglodyte to a professional agitator. He prefers the label of a realist, the guy in the crowd telling everybody that not only doesn’t the emperor have any clothes; he’s trying to steal ours.
Pellin has covered the Char-Meck scene for the better part of two decades, earning his fair share of fans and more than a few critics who wish he’d move to Nome, Alaska, and be eaten by wild bears.
When he’s not writing, he stays busy enjoying time with his wife and two kids. When he can break away for some R&R, he likes to fly fish (even if he doesn’t catch anything) and camp (even if it rains).
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department apparently is flush enough with cash to come off the hip for spiffy, new dress-white uniforms for its command staff, but not to pay dozens of sergeants who have worked overtime. Thirty-two CMPD sergeants, in fact, have filed a lawsuit that claims the Police Department and the City of Charlotte owe […]

The number of gang members is on the rise in North Carolina, up to 13,700 from last year’s count of just over 10,000, according to the recently released Governor’s Crime Commission report. The bangers break down into 900 organized gangs statewide. Not surprisingly, Charlotte-Mecklenburg tops the state with 160 gangs battling for turf in the […]

When there’s a drought the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities Department (CMUD) raises rates because conservation efforts lead to reduced water usage and less income. When there’s an abundance of rain, the utilities department raises rates because the wet weather yields less customer demand and declining revenues. When the weather is spot-on perfect, CMUD raises rates because that […]

The uptown paper of record catches up on a question that House Guest columnist Wayne Powers asked Commissioner Harold Cogdell last week, when Powers was guest hosting WBT’s The Pete Kaliner Show. To wit: would the county be willing to sell some of its assets to help plug a projected $95 million budget gap? Predictably, […]

City officials trying to pitch a nearly $8-million shortfall for next year’s budget as a sign that Charlotte is in relatively good shape are either completely delusional, or they think the public is a collective gang of ignorant buffoons. Look, folks, just because your neighbor was in a car wreck that left him hospitalized with […]

Taking lots of people for lots of rides, actually, and at an eye-popping annual cost of about $5-million for taxicab trips alone. It’s taken local attorney and always-vigilant House Guest columnist Tom Ashcraft months to pry loose details on the copious amounts of loot the Mecklenburg County Department of Social Services doled out for transportation […]

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education moved a step closer Tuesday night to the grim reality of having to layoff upwards of 800 employees, including about 600 teachers, in response to a funding shortfall that could require the district to cut $80 million from its budget. With a 6-3 vote, the board rejected a motion to […]

Katz slides behind the microphone for the weekday morning show, 5 a.m. to 9 a.m., on April 5. (Phew! For a second there, we thought it was going to […]

Color me a cynically, clinically insane conspiracy nut, but there’s a neuron firing in my brain’s Machiavellian lobe that says Mayor Anthony Foxx’s e-mail to council warning off sexual harassment of city staff has as much to do with politics as possible perversion. Not that politics and perversion are mutually exclusive. Foxx’s message, sent last […]
