Stories written by Mark Pellin
An award-winning journalist and former editor of The Rhinoceros Times in Charlotte, Pellin has been called everything from a misguided troglodyte to a professional agitator. He prefers the label of a realist, the guy in the crowd telling everybody that not only doesn’t the emperor have any clothes; he’s trying to steal ours. Pellin has covered the Char-Meck scene for the better part of two decades, earning his fair share of fans and more than a few critics who wish he’d move to Nome, Alaska, and be eaten by wild bears. When he’s not writing, he stays busy enjoying time with his wife and two kids. When he can break away for some R&R, he likes to fly fish (even if he doesn’t catch anything) and camp (even if it rains).

Reading Is Fundamental

At least you’d think so; unfortunately it’s a lesson that seems to be lost on most of Congress, and which Sen. Rand Paul is trying correct. This from The Hill: After blasting the Senate last week for passing a 600-page bill no one had time to read, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) introduced legislation that would […]

The Fickle Fracking Finger Of Fate

Leave it to Mecklenburg County’s own Becky Carney to showcase how by sheer ineptitude even an aggressively liberal Democrat can sometimes stumble onto the correct side of an important vote. In Carney’s case it came when she hit the wrong button to override Gov Bev’s veto of the state’s fracking bill, which clears the way […]

Pat McCrory’s Libertarian Problem

During his seven-term stint as Charlotte’s mayor, Pat McCrory did little to win favor with the lean-right conservative base of the Republican Party. Indeed, from his cheerleading for light rail to his cozy ties with the uptown lunch bunch, McCrory in many cases actively ostracized the same, leaving small-government, liberty-minded voters with a stale taste […]

Another Economic Nosedive

With all the talk and debate about John Roberts and Obamacare, what only a few weeks ago was the driving force of Republican talking points leading up to November seems to have taken a backseat. Lest anyone forget, it’s still about the economy. This from the Associated Press: U.S. manufacturing shrank in June for the […]

Meanwhile, Up In Michigan

They’re getting ready to celebrate July Fourth with talking urinal cakes. Honestly. This from The Detroit News: In an effort to cut down on drunken driving, the state is distributing the totally awesome named Interactive Urinal Communicators to some bars, restaurants and other drinkaterias in Wayne, Bay, Ottawa and Delta counties. Yup, talking urinal cakes. […]

Fed Audit Clears House Hurdle

Proving that perseverance can sometimes be half the battle, Ron Paul’s relentless pursuit for an audit of the Federal Reserve continues to move forward. The House Oversight Committee last week cleared a bill that takes Paul’s quest for an audit of the Fed’s monetary policy decisions one step closer to reality. This from Reuters: The […]
