Stories written by Mark Pellin
An award-winning journalist and former editor of The Rhinoceros Times in Charlotte, Pellin has been called everything from a misguided troglodyte to a professional agitator. He prefers the label of a realist, the guy in the crowd telling everybody that not only doesn’t the emperor have any clothes; he’s trying to steal ours. Pellin has covered the Char-Meck scene for the better part of two decades, earning his fair share of fans and more than a few critics who wish he’d move to Nome, Alaska, and be eaten by wild bears. When he’s not writing, he stays busy enjoying time with his wife and two kids. When he can break away for some R&R, he likes to fly fish (even if he doesn’t catch anything) and camp (even if it rains).

Commission Cage Match – Round II: Cogdell vs. Roberts

It was almost a year ago when Mecklenburg Commissioner Harold Cogdell seemed poised to pull off a palace coup, challenging fellow Democrat Jennifer Roberts for the chairmanship of the board of commissioners she had held for the last two terms. Aligned with the board’s four Republican minority members, Cogdell appeared to have the votes needed […]

The Ties That Bind

In a lawful society it’s considered bad form, dare I say criminal, to take a person’s money by force or deception for your own gain. Somehow that basic tenet has been subverted in what passes today for capitalism, but should more accurately and honestly be considered corporate gangsterism. One of the more insidious recent examples comes […]

Lobbying To Be President

For sheer hypocrisy, it’s becoming harder and harder to top Newt Gingrich. Concerning the man who blasts lobbyists as a scourge on responsible politics, we get this from The Washington Examiner’s Timothy Carney: First of all, we know that Gingrich has been paid by drug companies and by the drug lobby, notably during the Medicare […]

Day of Disgrace

The Occupy Wall Street movement had billed it as a Day of Action, marking the two-month anniversary of the movement, but it turned into a day of disgust and disgrace. Honestly, what possible positive argument can be made for terrorizing schoolchildren as a means of legitimate protest? They were caught in the middle of madness. […]

Helicopter Ben Flies Over China

In the history of criminal enterprises, when all is said and done, what are the chances of the Federal Reserve going down as the largest, most diabolical Ponzi scheme perpetrated wholesale on the American public? I’d say it goes neck-and-neck with Social Security.  This from CNSNews: At the close of business on Tuesday, the debt […]

Coda: Jenny and The Debts

Jennifer Roberts announced this week that she won’t seek another term on the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners, which she joined in 2004 and has held sway over as chairman for the last four years, a tenure that has spanned massive government growth and outrageous spending tempered only by a recent and far too late […]

Newt Mac Daddy

Just when it looked like Newt Gingrich was gaining ground in the GOP’s perpetual presidential debate sweepstakes, surging in several polls to top-tier contender status, comes this from Bloomberg news: Newt Gingrich made between $1.6 million and $1.8 million in consulting fees from two contracts with mortgage company Freddie Mac, according to two people familiar […]

CMS Stonewallers

Board of Education member Kaye McGarry is accusing Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools officials and her own board colleagues of deliberately keeping the public in the dark about mounting security threats and violence in schools that is putting students at risk. McGarry last month had requested a report on how significant shifts in student populations have impacted nearly […]

Thank A Veteran Today

It’s the right thing to do any day, but make the extra effort today. Thank them for their service and their sacrifice. Offer to buy them that cup of coffee, give them your place in line at a store. Listen to their stories and experiences. And then thank them – again.
