Stories written by Mark Pellin
An award-winning journalist and former editor of The Rhinoceros Times in Charlotte, Pellin has been called everything from a misguided troglodyte to a professional agitator. He prefers the label of a realist, the guy in the crowd telling everybody that not only doesn’t the emperor have any clothes; he’s trying to steal ours. Pellin has covered the Char-Meck scene for the better part of two decades, earning his fair share of fans and more than a few critics who wish he’d move to Nome, Alaska, and be eaten by wild bears. When he’s not writing, he stays busy enjoying time with his wife and two kids. When he can break away for some R&R, he likes to fly fish (even if he doesn’t catch anything) and camp (even if it rains).

The Emperor’s Magic Beans

Two cases of star gazing paint a fairly vivid picture of just how far into the lunacy lair our fair country’s leaders have wandered. First up, how about a little rehashed chatter of imperial ecstasy to kick off The One’s would-be penultimate term: New York Democratic Rep. Jose Serrano reintroduced a bill in Congress on Friday to […]

Merry Christmas

Luke 2:1-14  And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up […]

Naked Burglar Flees Alabama Home With Chihuahua

I got nothing to add here and confess to lifting the headline verbatim from WBTV, mainly because, well, naked burglar flees Alabama home with Chihuahua. A man and woman arrested for manufacturing methamphetamine in Morgan County, AL are also charged for a previous burglary in which authorities said they made themselves at home in a […]

Mayor Nanny’s Bounty On Butts

Cigarette butts, that is. Not content with banning smoking in restaurants, public parks and open spaces, along with serving up a whole menu of other bans that includes outlawing the sale of super-sized sodas, NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg is at again, this time looking to effectively snuff smoking in private residences. Yes, your home. This […]

Mecklenburg Commissioner And Friends Turn Into Santa’s Helpers For The Holidays

A micro-social philanthropy movement hit the holidays last year at stores like Kmart and Wal-Mart, when people across the country took to anonymously paying off layaway accounts for families in need, all in the spirit of Christmas giving. The so-called “layaway angels” made an appearance in Charlotte, including one group led by Brianne Willard, Curtis […]

Hug Your Kids Today

You should hug your kids every day, but it takes on particular import in the aftermath of a tragedy like the one that unfolded today in Connecticut. Simply horrific: NEWTOWN, Conn.
