Stories written by Mark Pellin
An award-winning journalist and former editor of The Rhinoceros Times in Charlotte, Pellin has been called everything from a misguided troglodyte to a professional agitator. He prefers the label of a realist, the guy in the crowd telling everybody that not only doesn’t the emperor have any clothes; he’s trying to steal ours. Pellin has covered the Char-Meck scene for the better part of two decades, earning his fair share of fans and more than a few critics who wish he’d move to Nome, Alaska, and be eaten by wild bears. When he’s not writing, he stays busy enjoying time with his wife and two kids. When he can break away for some R&R, he likes to fly fish (even if he doesn’t catch anything) and camp (even if it rains).

Um, About Those DSS Taxi Rides

It seems the FBI has some questions and is investigating two local taxicab companies that took the Mecklenburg Department of Social Services for a ride – or not, in multiple cases allegedly bilking the taxpayers for phantom trips. This from WCNC: The two cab companies made up about two-thirds of the DSS billing in 2009, […]

Speech Police Down Under

Australia’s second most populous state is getting ready to crack down on foul language. Sad to say, but I’d be stone-effing broke within a day. This from the Australian Broadcasting Corp: The Victorian Government plans to introduce laws this week that will give police permanent power to issue on-the-spot fines to people who swear. Under […]

Wachovia: A Trip Down Drug Money Laundering Lane

Last month marked a disturbing milestone for former Queen City darling Wachovia, when a so-called “deferred prosecution” of the ex-banking titan expired for its role in laundering billions of dollars for murderous Mexican drug cartels. What, you didn’t hear about it the first time around? Here’s a fresh reminder from the Guardian U.K.’s Observer – […]

Mayor And Police Chief In Full Riot Control

Mayor Anthony Foxx and Police Chief Rodney Monroe used the better part of an hour yesterday trying to explain why the riot that rocked uptown and resulted in 70 arrests, one shooting fatality and one shooting injury was not, in fact, a riot. Or a melee. Or any other moniker that might give the uptown […]

Paul Turns Up Heat On The Fed

And it sounds like he intends to keep both burners at full boil until he gets some answers about where all the money went from emergency loans that the Fed was pushing out like Pez candy. This from Fox Business: The chairman of the House subcommittee that oversees the Federal Reserve demanded Tuesday that the […]

Mexican Mayors Fret Flood Of California Convicts

Concerns over midnight border crossings are getting turned upside down, in the wake of a Supreme Court decision that compels the state of California to reduce its prison population by upward of 30,000 inmates. California officials haven’t made any decisions on how they’ll comply with the requirements, but because a goodly portion of the state’s […]

Peace & Love Gangbanging

Charlotte’s gang problem isn’t really a gang problem, more like a version of the Brady Bunch and Partridge Family living under one roof, according to Police Chief Rodney Monroe, who offered this stunning evaluation of the local crime scene in the wake of the mob riot that erupted uptown, leaving one dead, one wounded, 70 […]

Fiscal Conservatism Gets Tillisized

As in torpedoed and blown out of the water: House Speaker Thom Tillis, an alleged fiscal conservative Republican from north Mecklenburg, has twisted enough arms and cut enough backroom deals to stuff upward of $28 million back into the Senate budget to help pay for an extension of the vaunted light-rail Lynx Blue Line. The […]
