Stories written by Mark Pellin
An award-winning journalist and former editor of The Rhinoceros Times in Charlotte, Pellin has been called everything from a misguided troglodyte to a professional agitator. He prefers the label of a realist, the guy in the crowd telling everybody that not only doesn’t the emperor have any clothes; he’s trying to steal ours. Pellin has covered the Char-Meck scene for the better part of two decades, earning his fair share of fans and more than a few critics who wish he’d move to Nome, Alaska, and be eaten by wild bears. When he’s not writing, he stays busy enjoying time with his wife and two kids. When he can break away for some R&R, he likes to fly fish (even if he doesn’t catch anything) and camp (even if it rains).

‘Tis The Season

Kicking things off with some holiday cheer from Fiona Apple, The Waitresses, Natalie Merchant, and Steve Martin:

Task Force Hilarity

The kind that makes you laugh until you cry: the vaunted Future of the Library Task Force reports that merging some of the library system’s departments could only save about $290,000 a year, which is just a pinch more than the $225,000 being spent on – wait for it – the task force’s budget. Yes, […]

About Those Free CIAA Tickets

The governor of New York gets slapped with a hefty fine for accepting free tickets to a World Series game; Mecklenburg County commissioners and Charlotte city councilmembers continue to receive “free” tickets to the annual CIAA basketball tourney, after greasing the skids by doling out $400K a year of your tax dollars to the CIAA. […]

Clunkers Rescues Food Safety Bill

In a twisted case of legislative resuscitation, Senate Republicans have somehow managed to help breathe new life into the monstrosity that is the so-called Food Safety Bill, which late Sunday night was approved by unanimous consent in chamber with a voice vote. The food safety bill, recall, was left for dead earlier this month after […]

Carolina Concerto Grosso

Or maybe just gross would be more appropriate. As if watching the Panthers hasn’t been painful enough this year, the stage is set for potentially true horrendousness. Imagine Jimmy Clausen on a tuck-and-bail, synched to the harmonics of “Achy, Breaky Heart.” It could be coming to a TV near you, courtesy of Fox Sports. This […]

Olympic Medals In Holiday Spirit

Here’s a piece of good news: CMS students not making headlines for brawls. Quite the opposite in fact, where over at Olympic High you’ve got students up at the crack of dawn, braving wintry weather to drive to school and wrap gifts they collected for kids at Hidden Valley Elementary, as part of their Homelessness […]

Employment Implosion

This was supposed to be headed in exactly the opposite direction, right. I mean according to Gov. Bev, the state’s spending spree on business incentive bribes is supposed to be creating new jobs left and right. Not so much. The ESC numbers released today show just how brutal November was on the jobless front with […]

A Tea Party Anniversary To Remember

I mean really, how totally and perfectly appropriate that on the anniversary of the Boston Tea Party, tax-and-spender Majority Leader Harry Reid was forced late Thursday night to kill his pork-laden, $1.2 trillion omnibus spending bill on the floor of the Senate. An added bonus: along with nearly $8 billion worth of earmarks tucked into […]

Omnibust Porker Bill

Forget Stephen King; if you really want a chillingly horrific read check out the $1.1 trillion omnibus spending bill brewed up and released by Democrats this week, all 1,924 pages of it. Or better yet, let somebody else do the heavy reading for you. This from CNSNews: Senate Republicans gave notice Tuesday evening of their […]
