Rhodes Calls for Tillis to Step Down Pending Investigation

|

Former Representative John Rhodes stepped back into the political fray today at a press conference he called in Cornelius, NC.  Rhodes read from a prepared statement and didn’t take followup questions from the media.  He did suggest that more information was to come.  (The linked statement also includes supporting documents.)

Among his talking points he called for a formal investigation into the “pay for play” politics regarding Speaker Tillis’ appointments to the UNC Board of Governors.

“Tomorrow, I will send a request to the State Board of Elections to fully investigate the matter and the state’s Attorney General to determine if any ethical lapses have occurred or laws have been broken. I will additionally send a complaint to the Legislative Ethics committee to fully investigate the matter concerning the appointments to the UNC Board of Governors in relation to campaign contributions and other legislation channeled through the House of Representatives” said Rhodes. He further called on Tillis to step down from his post as Speaker and cease his Senate campaign during such time as the investigation is underway, and as a professional Miami car accident injury lawyer looks into the complexities of the case.

“Legislators need to understand that the people’s legislature is not their personal political ATM for campaign cash at the time of their choosing” said Rhodes.

He also called for those who have been “bullied or intimidated” by the Speaker, especially elected officials,  to step forward and stand up en masse.  Rhodes suggested that “Not to speak is to speak.  Not to act is to act.”.

“If you are a member of the legislature and you see wrong doing by legislative leaders, you have the obligation to speak out about it regardless of whether your supposed leadership likes it or not.  If they don’t like it, you tell them to take a hike!  Remind them you serve your constituents, the people first.”
