Celebrating Freedom
First and foremost HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA! May God bless you and yours. I sit here in the wee early hours of July 4th, 2010 with many thoughts running through my head. I am thinking back to this afternoon when I put out on display my brand spanking new American flag. As I attached the poll with my flag to the house several neighbors preparing for a backyard BBQ celebration hollered across the way and gave thumbs up. One driver of a lone car passing by offered a quick salute.
As I was done I stepped back and smiled. Earlier in the day I had the privilege of witnessing a father at a fireworks store explain our impending celebration to his 6 year old son. Later this evening I attended that very same neighbors BBQ. Hamburgers, hot dogs, cold adult beverages, badminton, horseshoes and a couple of legal pyrotechnics. Tiny American flags adorned the railings as we all celebrated. But perhaps the greatest part of the entire evening came near 9pm. You see, two of the guests share a birthday with America. We sang the traditional Happy Birthday song to both John and Melanie. But then our host began to pass a message to all in attendance – Happy Birthday one more time and this time it was for the good ole USA.
My smile was evident as we sang for this great country but what happened next brought a tear to my eye. Our crowd of thankful, grateful Americans broke into a chorus of God Bless America. All I can say is WOW! I hope you all understand how I feel. You see, I love this country, warts and all. I have all great faith that no matter who tries to subvert the founding principles of this country that they will fail. I believe in our people. I believe in our country.
Tomorrow (or as many of you read this today) I will awake to celebrate a birthday of a country like no other. I will watch parades, celebrations and fireworks displays sponsored by citizens and businesses alike. I will listen to patriotic tunes with a swell in my heart. I will look at Old Glory with a smile on my face. We do that here in America. Unlike some countries that celebrate the founding of a regime with a display of military might through Red Square or Tienanmen Square we celebrate with displays by THE PEOPLE. After all it is WE THE PEOPLE that we are celebrating. It is our country that we proudly cheer on. I would like to remind many who think differently that it is not the government that we celebrate but the citizens of this country as a whole that we celebrate. It is our spirit that we raise up.
All I really wanted to say here is God Bless you America. May you live and prosper forever! Please be kind to your country and give it a big ole birthday gift. But be even kinder in holding that gift until November. Because I hope to remind you that for most of us the greatest gift we can give this land is to VOTE!
