Perdue Veto Overturned

|

Beverly Perdue was the first North Carolina Governor to veto a state budget.

She is now the first North Carolina Governor to have her budget veto overridden.

While it was widely reported that the Thom Tillis led North Carolina House would vote to override the veto on Wednesday, it came as a surprise when it came to fruition just shortly past midnight.

“Every day that we wait is another day the agencies of the state are wondering what they’re going to do,” said Tillis.

In a 73-46 vote, the three-fifths necessary to override was achieved with the assistance of five democrats who crossed party lines.

Despite lobbying campaigns and petition drives by MoveOn.org and others, democratic state legislators William Brisson, James Crawford, Jr., Dewey Hill, Bill Owens, and Timothy Spear joined the GOP to ensure that the $19.7 billion budget would pass.

The Senate is set to vote later today, but with a veto proof 31-19 GOP majority, the overturn is all but certain.
