Voting for Voter ID
Just a thought I had recently that I wanted to pass along to all like minded citizens who support efforts to strengthen Voter ID efforts in North Carolina. My name isn’t important, it’s the idea that matters, which is why this is an anonymous post. Let’s call this “Voting for Voter ID” for lack of a catchier title (feel free to come up with your own label in the comments).
What if we had a few voters in every county throughout the state engage in a little “civil disobedience” this primary season by having them show their ID’s to poll workers? Civil disobedience is in quotes because it’s not actually illegal to show a poll worker your ID, in fact, most of them get irritated when you do, but I think it would send a message that voters in every county in North Carolina support Voter ID laws (which Gov. Perdue vetoed might I remind you).
It’s a simple idea. Let’s encourage voters to have their state issued ID’s out and ready when they approach any poll worker who asks their name before voting and then to just volunteer their ID’s regardless of whether they’re asked for them (which of course they wont be). If the poll worker questions their actions, I suggest a simple, non-confrontational response, something along the lines of “Well don’t you want to verify my identity?” or, “If ID is required before you enter
the Department of Justice building it should be required before you vote as well.”
If you support Voter ID laws in North Carolina and want to make a statement at early voting or on primary day, May 8, be sure to bring your ID with you. Again, it’s a simple gesture that won’t cost you anything, but the message will be sent statewide that voters in North Carolina support Voter ID laws.
