Nice Work if You can Get It

Most of you by now have heard Tim Newman, former CEO of the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority, was arrested for drunk driving after a hit and run accident on I-77. What a colorful and privileged life he has had. After a list of  improprieties he had to step down from his $300,000+ job as CEO of the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority about a year ago, he managed to be assigned to a new position created just for him as director of sales. That was after it was discovered by a blogger that Tim had been funneling $25,000 per year for four years of unapproved “tip” money to a saleswoman from the tax exempt CIAA in exchange for her exceptional service in planning their tournaments.  After being embarrassed for having to cover for their decision not to fire Tim for such a long time, the CRVA finally let him go this past February. The CRVA is still compensating Tim over $10,000 every two weeks (~$300,000/year).

The real story is why, and why did it take an accident to make this information public? The impression is someone really likes Tim enough to stick their neck out several feet, but that seems unlikely since late one night he sent a message to Anthony Foxx to, “Go to hell!” Doesn’t the CRVA board report to Anthony Foxx? Is Tim’s compensation hush money? Tim was long known for his generosity for getting premium tickets for members of the city council and county commission to CRVA events at no charge, but that activity was publically known. No hush money needed there. It must be very difficult to make over $300,000 per year with a staff of sixteen when not a single facility you’re managing is making money.

Our tax dollars at work again for one of the downtown crowd.
