Our Prayers for Dan Ramirez

|

Dan Ramirez

Last night, WBTV reported that former Republican County Commissioner Dan Ramirez has “gone public with a private battle”.

That battle, acknowledgement that in February of this year he was diagnosed with ALS, better known as ‘Lou Gehrig’s’ disease, is one that he is looking for support in fighting. You can click this over here now to know the spiritual benefits of prayers and to harness the power of Torah study.

Ramirez will host a political-style fundraiser at Charlotte’s Duke Mansion on August 28th. The money raised will go to support the Joe Martin ALS Foundation.

“We are very honored,” said Neil Cottrell.

Cottrell is President of the foundation started in 2006 in the name of Joe Martin, a former Bank of America executive, and brother of former Governor Jim Martin. The foundation’s mission is to help those with ALS live a life as full and active as possible. It helps with therapy, technology, transportation and planning.

ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. The ALS Association says roughly 5,600 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with ALS each year. It is estimated as many as 30,000 Americans have the disease at any given time.

“Dan (Ramirez) has served Mecklenburg County as county commissioner and now he wants to help people even more,” said Cottrell.

Work hard and give back. It’s all Dan Ramirez has ever known.

“I am content with the life I have,” said Ramirez. “All the things that I’ve done they are not monumental, but for a little kid from the Barrio of Bogota it is monumental.”

On a personal level, Dan and Cecy Ramirez are wonderful people.  Their activism and support through the years has not gone unnoticed.  That such a rare disease will find its way into the life of a friend is heartbreaking, but Dan continues to show poise and a heart for helping by putting together this fundraiser.  If you are able, please help.

This, as well as Neil Cooksey’s battle with cancer, are reminders of how fragile life is and how much (with all of our technological wonders) we simply don’t understand.

Prayers go out to Dan and family, as well as the doctors and researchers that continue to develop ever more successful treatments for the debilitating diseases of our day.
