This Abortion’s On You
In the March 2010 Carolina Journal, a publication put out by the John Locke Foundation, Associate Editor David Bass wrote an article “Counties, Metros Buying Abortions Illegally With Taxpayer Funds.”
Seems many counties and municipalities in NC offer their employees abortion benefits in their taxpayer funded group health plans. So property taxes are being used to fund abortions. As you might imagine/hope, this is illegal under North Carolina law and has been since 1981. In Stam v. State of North Carolina, the state Supreme Court found that the General Assembly has never given counties or municipalities the authority to pay for elective abortions with local tax dollars.
This hasn’t stopped either Mecklenburg County or Charlotte from ignoring the law, and offering the ” health benefit” to their employees, as I learned after reading the article. Being the curious individual I am , I contacted both the city and county HR Departments and inquired as to exactly how many children had been murdered with taxpayer funds in Charlotte and Mecklenburg County. This was in April of 2010.
In July I got my questions answered. Charlotte had paid for 12 abortions in the last five years, Mecklenburg County five. They both had been offering to pay for abortions with your money for at least the last 25 years (which was the longest any current HR employee could remember), but to obtain the full number of “procedures” would be cost prohibitive, or so I was told.
Now I know human life is exceedingly cheap in our “progressive” city. After all there are over 10,000 private abortions done in Charlotte each and every year; but call me weird (and you won’t be the first), the murder of 3-4 innocent human lives annually with public money makes me very upset.
I proceeded to contact all my elected representatives and asked them to try to cut off local taxpayer funding of abortion: I emailed Bill James, Karen Bentley, Neil Cooksey, Ed Peacock, Andy Dulin, Warren Cooksey, and copied GOP County Chairman Rob Bryan. James responded immediately and told me he would try to get the other two commissioners to do something. No one else took the time to respond. So I tried twice more.
Finally on 7-16-2010 I sent the following email to ” staunch” pro-life GOP Chairman Bryan:
Mr. Chairman:
As you know, I have asked the three Republicans on City Council to do what they can to eliminate the taxpayer funded abortion benefit for city employees in the city health plan. All three have ignored my request. I ask you, as Chairman of the Republican Party of Mecklenburg County, to use your position of authority to prevail upon Peacock, Cooksey, and Dulin to take action. Please let me know your thoughts.
Best Regards,
Martin Davis
At 2:13 pm I got this response from the Chairman:
” I am going to talk to them about this.”
At 2:36 I replied:
“Thank you. Please keep me posted.”
Of course I never heard back from Chairman Bryan, Peacock, Dulin, or Cooksey. None of them has ever uttered one syllable about taxpayer funded abortion in the public square.
I bring this up because these three Ruling Class Elitist, professional politician, political hacks, are all going to run for City Council yet again, and I wanted you to know exactly what you’re dealing with when you go to the polls. You see, these guys claim they’re Republicans, but they’re really not.
