Why do Tom Murry and Ruth Samuelson Want Your Power Bill to Go Up?
It’s just come to my attention that a handful of Republican legislators, including Charlotte’s own Ruth Samuelson, have introduced the kind of legislation we thought we’d seen the end of after last November’s landslide election.
They’ve introduced HB 495, the euphemistically-titled “Solar Jobs Bill.” The bill requires Duke Power and Progress Energy to double the amount of electricity it purchases from producers of solar power, one of the most expensive types of so-called “green” energy.
As Bane Widlow of Carolina Politics Online reports, both of NC’s electrical utilities are opposed to this bill, as it alters an agreement negotiated only 4 years ago and will incur additional costs which would be passed on to their customers. Those costs would show up in your power bill.
North Carolinians have long suffered under more than a century of one-party Democratic rule, in which special interests used political connections to secure slush money and favors from state government. If solar power were as economical and beneficial as the Raleigh News & Observer claims, its lobbyists wouldn’t be looking to use the force of government to force Duke Power & Progress Energy to purchase it. Apparently a handful of Republicans in Raleigh are happy to “play ball.”
Give Tom Murry and Ruth Samuelson a call and ask them why they want your power bill to go up. Then look up your own NC House Representative here and and tell him or her to OPPOSE HB 495.
