Judge Manning Tramples Constitution, For The Children

One can only be amused at the convoluted thinking Judge Howard Manning and his supporters supply to his distortion of his authority under the state constitution. The instant case has to do with North Carolina’s pre-kindergarten program for 4-year-olds. According to the aggressively liberal mindset, the legislature is supposed to cough up $30,000,000 or more […]

Guns and Government

The headlines and ledes paint the picture: an off-duty Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office detention officer opens fire on a vehicle that rear-ended his car; meanwhile, the paper brings other news of Wildlife Officers going wild with their guns. Reminded of how government agents have little respect for others and are seldom, if ever, punished for […]

Crony Continental Capitalism

There are those who decry capitalism for its faults and propensities to reward some at the expense of others. There are others who, more accurately, say what we have in the US is crony capitalism, which is not to be confused with true capitalism. The gaming to lure Continental Tire’s new plant to North Carolina […]

Religious Right vs. Religious Liberty

The Women’s Right to Know Act is another one of those ubiquitous pieces of legislation where the title says exactly the opposite of what the bill does. The title should be: Government’s Use of Force to Make Women Look at Pictures of Fetuses They are Thinking about Having Aborted. North Carolina Representative Ruth Samuelson, a […]

Debt Lessons From Mecklenburg County

As the world turns, the creditors continue to line up for their interest payments. In Greece the lenders let the politicians borrow money to spend on their current pet projects and continued to lend them money for more pet projects until Greece cannot repay the loans. This was not a difficult situation to foresee. Something […]

Liberals Flunk Vocational Education

Labor Day comes and goes each year and the reason for it fades into the past. Then comes the Washington Post’s E.J. Dionne to remind us: In an opinion typical of the left wing media, Dionne makes the vain attempt to portray Republicans, Fox News, the Tea Party and those of similar views as opponents […]

Money For Nothing?

Recently I wrote a column that brought objections from some readers, which indicates the issue needs be more deeply dissected. What responsibilities should recipients of transfer payments have, if any, and what rights should they give up to those who pay? In choosing to transfer money from one group of people to another, for whatever […]

Eugenics Program Pits Past Against Present

This is a curious situation. A bleeding heart liberal, Representative Larry Womble (D-Winston-Salem), and House Speaker Thom Tillis (R-Mecklenburg), seem to think taxpayers should give money – reparations of a sort, if you will – to survivors of North Carolina’s eugenics sterilization program. Maybe. What is the situation? Why should money be given? The question, […]

Advocacy Groups Tap Taxpayers

Jails (not to be confused with prisons) exist for two purposes. One is to house those people who by dint of their anti-social proclivities alienate themselves from society. The second, less commonly understood, is to house those people who find themselves unable to cope normally with society, yet do not commit anti-social actions. We generally […]

Judge Howard Manning and The Ruling Class

Reflecting on the Ruling Class, as described by Codevilla, while reading “The Death of Common Sense,’” by Philip K. Howard, one can almost hear the conversations in the cloisters as judges discuss rules for the ruled. They may rationalize these decisions as benevolent to some individual or special interest group but one will notice they […]
