Stories written by Mark Pellin
An award-winning journalist and former editor of The Rhinoceros Times in Charlotte, Pellin has been called everything from a misguided troglodyte to a professional agitator. He prefers the label of a realist, the guy in the crowd telling everybody that not only doesn’t the emperor have any clothes; he’s trying to steal ours. Pellin has covered the Char-Meck scene for the better part of two decades, earning his fair share of fans and more than a few critics who wish he’d move to Nome, Alaska, and be eaten by wild bears. When he’s not writing, he stays busy enjoying time with his wife and two kids. When he can break away for some R&R, he likes to fly fish (even if he doesn’t catch anything) and camp (even if it rains).

CMS: Insert Knife, Twist, Apply Salt

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is going to have to get every dime’s worth out of its multi-million-dollar PR budget to spin their way out of this one: firing teachers in front of their students. Nice touch. Next up, the school board clubs baby seals during CMS-TV’s penultimate episode of UpFront! with Superintendent Peter Gorman.

The Big Number On Your Ballot

Could be $198.6 million. That’s the size of the bond city leaders are currently floating: $156.6 million for transportation (79 percent of total package); $32 million for neighborhood improvements (16 percent); and $10 million for affordable housing (5 percent). Call me crazy, but asking voters to approve spending nearly $200 million when unemployment continues to […]

Pelosi Bossing Around Bishops

… and Cardinals and Archbishops, too. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has taken to the pulpit, almost literally, her zealous pitch to legalize the status of millions of illegal voters, er, aliens. Earlier this month, Pelosi was staying busy encouraging Catholics of the cloth to start using their preaching powers to push immigration reform. “The cardinals, […]

State lawmakers opened their legislative short session in Raleigh yesterday with a wild card, floating a bid to bring back video poker that could potentially raise a pile of new cash – about $350 million for the first year and up to $576 million by the third year. Sen. David Hoyle, a Gaston County Democrat, […]

King Harry: Let Them Eat Cake

Mecklenburg County Manager Harry Jones says he won’t be recommending raises this year for county employees, but is keeping the possibility of a fat bonus for himself on the table. And isn’t that exactly the kinds of inspiring news you want to be reading, if you’re a county employee burning the candle at both ends […]

School Board Approves Pink Slip Budget

A fractious Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education on Tuesday night voted 6-3 to approve a schools budget that includes plans to slash upwards of 600 teacher and teacher assistant positions, implement a pay-to-play scheme for middle- and high school sports, increase class sizes while shrinking transportation options to popular magnet schools, and have students pay fees […]

Handgun Discharged At CMS Elementary

Less than 12 hours before the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education is slated to approve a recommended budget that slashes teacher positions, guts teacher assistants positions, and further reduces funding for campus security associates, a .22-caliber handgun brought to school by a third-grader was discharged inside a classroom at University Meadows Elementary. No injuries were reported. […]

Tossing Politics Out The Window

I can count on one hand – OK, maybe one or two fingers – the number of times I’ve agreed politically with Susan Burgess. She’s a raging liberal and hardcore leftist who pushes an agenda that embraces expansive and expensive government. That said, Burgess always finds time to return phone calls from reporters, is willing […]
