Stories written by Mark Pellin
An award-winning journalist and former editor of The Rhinoceros Times in Charlotte, Pellin has been called everything from a misguided troglodyte to a professional agitator. He prefers the label of a realist, the guy in the crowd telling everybody that not only doesn’t the emperor have any clothes; he’s trying to steal ours. Pellin has covered the Char-Meck scene for the better part of two decades, earning his fair share of fans and more than a few critics who wish he’d move to Nome, Alaska, and be eaten by wild bears. When he’s not writing, he stays busy enjoying time with his wife and two kids. When he can break away for some R&R, he likes to fly fish (even if he doesn’t catch anything) and camp (even if it rains).

Politico Payday In Charlotte-Mecklenburg

When payday rolls around for local elected officials, not everyone pockets the same amount of loot. And in at least one case, the dollar disparity has sparked a squabble over what should be considered appropriate compensation for our governing class. It started, as many political dust-ups in Charlotte-Mecklenburg do, with an email from Commissioner Bill […]

Saturday Night House Party

Send us a link with your favorite tunes and vids (editor@pundithouse.com) and we’ll work them into the rotation. Been busy today checking with kinfolk Down East and am happy to report that, aside from some minor flooding and a forest of trees scattered across yards and roads, everybody is safe in the wake of Irene:

Mayor Foxx Junketeering To China

Of course he is. With the Charlotte area’s unemployment rate still topping double digits, what else would Mayor Anthony Foxx do except fly to China to help spur local economic development by indulging in some authentic Szechuan chicken, or something. And guess who gets to pay for the trip. Of course you do. Taxpayers are […]

It Pays To Skip School

At least it does in Camden, N.J., where officials have decided it’s a capital idea to hand out C-notes by the fistful to encourage school kids to, um, go to school. But first, you apparently have to a healthy record of truancy to qualify for the payout, or payoff as the case might be. This […]

March Madness In August

Mirroring the bracketology frenzy that surrounds the NCAA’s annual hoops tourney, the Civitas Bad Bill of the Year Tournament returns with a slam-dunk skewering of some of the most egregious and outlandish legislation cooked up this year by the General Assembly. The “bad bills” were selected “based on their intrusion into the private lives of […]

Backdoor Bailout for BAC?

At the risk of trolling the rumor mill, this one’s too good to pass. Consider the crushing implications for the uptown lunch bunch’s collective ego and bottom-line if the latest flash bomb to hit BAC somehow proves true. This from 24/7 Wall St.: There is a rumor circulated on Wall St. that JP Morgan (NYSE:JPM) […]

Mainstream Media Owes an Apaulogy

If you haven’t checked out former MeckDeck guerilla blogger Jeff Taylor’s new venture, The Freelance, now’s a good time to remedy the oversight. Taylor delivers a scathing indictment of the media’s handling of Ron Paul’s campaign, using this piece of arrogance from the Chicago Tribune as a launching pad: “In short, no, [Paul] will never […]

Kicking things off with one from former CMS board member (and my old gunning compadre back with The Rhino) Larry Gauvreua, who couldn’t have picked a more aptly-named tune – “Tribulations” – to describe his tenure behind […]
