Stories written by Mark Pellin
An award-winning journalist and former editor of The Rhinoceros Times in Charlotte, Pellin has been called everything from a misguided troglodyte to a professional agitator. He prefers the label of a realist, the guy in the crowd telling everybody that not only doesn’t the emperor have any clothes; he’s trying to steal ours. Pellin has covered the Char-Meck scene for the better part of two decades, earning his fair share of fans and more than a few critics who wish he’d move to Nome, Alaska, and be eaten by wild bears. When he’s not writing, he stays busy enjoying time with his wife and two kids. When he can break away for some R&R, he likes to fly fish (even if he doesn’t catch anything) and camp (even if it rains).

Streetcar Primes Pump For Porkulus Redux

It’s only appropriate that a streetcar plan hatched with the explicit goal of buying votes to help defeat repeal of Charlotte’s half-cent sales tax for transit would, years later, still find itself being used as a handy campaign tool designed to push a purely political agenda. That was the case on Monday, when U.S. Transportation […]

Politics Going To The Dogs

It’s bad enough that less than 3 percent of eligible voters turned out for Charlotte’s primary elections last week; worse still that they managed to elect a lesbian community organizer who got a bulk of her campaign boost from left-wing rouge advocacy groups, apparently has never held a real job and has at least one […]

Saturday Night House Party

A special edition this week, with congratulations and best wishes to House Guest columnist Adam Love and his wonderful wife, Kristina, on the birth of their beautiful baby girl – Gwendolyn Mae Love. Cheers! For whatever it’s worth, Adam, this one always worked wonders – even with lousy pipes like mine – when I pulled […]

Gold Trumps Greenbacks

Recall the derision and palpable scorn that usually meets Ron Paul and his persistent gold standard fever rants. Or how about the hearty chuckle everybody got from that loon, Rep. Glen Bradley, right here in our own back yard, and his crazy-mad notion to pass the N.C. Constitutional Hard Tender Act. Donald Trump is laughing […]

Tailgating For A Great Cause

Score one for the good guys. Earlier this month, PunditHouse photographer Glen Simmons won the DIRECTV Head2Head NASCAR Media Challenge, which carried a $2,500 prize to be donated to a charity of the winner’s choice. PunditHouse couldn’t be happier and more honored to donate the proceeds to the Zach Ramsey Children’s Cancer Fund. We’ll be […]

Calorie Cops

It’s come to this across the pond, where government agents in the UK are yanking four children from their home, not because the kids are being abused, neglected or traumatized, but simply because they are, in a word, fat. This from the Daily Mail: Four obese children are on the brink of being permanently removed […]

Not a Sports Blog, but…

It was flat-out strange seeing John Kasay kick for a team other than Carolina, but still cool watching him stick two between the uprights – even if it was for the Saints.

CMS Pairs Sept. 11 Event with Celebration of Mexican-American Independence Day

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools has several events and activities planned to commemorate Sept. 11, with students, teachers and staff remembering and reflecting “on this day in history through instructional lessons, ceremonies and programs,” according to a CMS media release. One event in particular caught my eye: Garinger High School Sept. 11 Commemoration (McAlpine Creek Parkway, 8711 Monroe Road) […]

Primary Primer For District 7 City Council Race

Incumbent Councilmember Warren Cooksey squares off against challenger Jay Privette in the GOP primary for District 7 on the Charlotte City Council. And it’s for all the marbles – there is no Democrat on the ballot for November’s general election, which means the winner of next Tuesday’s primary will represent the southeast Charlotte district on […]

Labor Pains

In a testament to the power of the Union Label, this year Labor Day weekend was preceded with news that the country flatlined job growth for the month of August, creating exactly zero new jobs, while the unemployment rate remained stuck at an abysmal 9.1 percent. It was the first time since World War II […]
