Stories written by Mark Pellin
An award-winning journalist and former editor of The Rhinoceros Times in Charlotte, Pellin has been called everything from a misguided troglodyte to a professional agitator. He prefers the label of a realist, the guy in the crowd telling everybody that not only doesn’t the emperor have any clothes; he’s trying to steal ours. Pellin has covered the Char-Meck scene for the better part of two decades, earning his fair share of fans and more than a few critics who wish he’d move to Nome, Alaska, and be eaten by wild bears. When he’s not writing, he stays busy enjoying time with his wife and two kids. When he can break away for some R&R, he likes to fly fish (even if he doesn’t catch anything) and camp (even if it rains).

In Local GovCo We Trust

At least according to Gallup, which found in a recent poll that “two-thirds of Americans have a great deal or fair amount of confidence in their local governments to handle local problems, and a solid majority the same way about their state government.” So how do those confidence and trust numbers hold up for Char-Meck […]

Achievement and Talent Benched

In a similar vein as the warped concept that all students deserve a passing grade, or that every young athlete deserves a trophy, comes news that a football player has been benched for scoring too many touchdowns. In this case, it’s 11-year-old Demias Jimerson from Malvern, AK, where officials have reinstated what’s known as the […]

Gov Bev’s Comedy Jam

Come one, folks; it’s obvious that Gov. Beverly Perdue was joking when she let this one fly while speaking to a Rotary Club: “The one good thing about Raleigh is that for so many years we worked across party lines.” I mean, really, working across party lines with a Democrat Kleptocracy that for years abused […]

Performance Pay Cluster Buck

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools officials are trying their best to convince the masses that a newly christened, so-called talent effectiveness project has nothing – positively, without a doubt, absolutely nothing – to do with teacher evaluation, assessments and performance pay. That sales pitch was going great at Tuesday night’s school board meeting, until those same officials were […]

EPA To Create Army Of Worker Drones

Team BO has finally found a way to create new jobs; in this case, it’s a veritable army of new government bureaucrats. Unfortunately, and wholly unsurprising, it will come at the cost of increased regulation that is almost certain to kill business and, by extension, actual, private-sector job creation: The Environmental Protection Agency has said […]

Saturday Night House Party

This has to rank as one of the more jarring political couplings of the year: Ron Paul and …. Barry Manilow? This from the Daily Caller: Grammy award-winning musician Barry Manilow told The Daily Caller that he agrees with “just about everything” 2012 Republican presidential candidate Rep. Ron Paul says, calling him a “solid” contender […]

Illegal Headline Failure

It’d be nice to think it’s just an innocent editorial oversight when the uptown paper runs a banner headline that reads Judge orders immigrants removed from church, when the more accurate and honest header would be Judge orders illegal immigrants removed from country. The subterfuge, however, doesn’t end with just a headline that makes it […]

Thar She Blows! CMS Lands Broad Prize

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools learned this week that it finally won the coveted Board Prize, after years of yearning and hundreds of millions of dollars spent in pursuit of the elusive Holy Grail of urban education. Indeed, during his tenure at the helm, former Superintendent Peter Gorman at times seemed on an almost Ahabian quest to land […]
