Stories written by Mark Pellin
An award-winning journalist and former editor of The Rhinoceros Times in Charlotte, Pellin has been called everything from a misguided troglodyte to a professional agitator. He prefers the label of a realist, the guy in the crowd telling everybody that not only doesn’t the emperor have any clothes; he’s trying to steal ours. Pellin has covered the Char-Meck scene for the better part of two decades, earning his fair share of fans and more than a few critics who wish he’d move to Nome, Alaska, and be eaten by wild bears. When he’s not writing, he stays busy enjoying time with his wife and two kids. When he can break away for some R&R, he likes to fly fish (even if he doesn’t catch anything) and camp (even if it rains).

The Turnip Taxpayer Syndrome

County Manager Harry Jones’ proposed tax hike budget is taking what has become the county government’s catch cliché – doing more with less – and twisting it to a new mantra of grabbing more from  less. As Jeff Taylor notes earlier this week, Jones’ proposed budget and its $907.1 million revaluation harvest of property tax […]

Chamber Music

Says here that the Chamber of Commerce doesn’t think now is the time to be creating new taxes. Great, glad to hear it. So I’m certain all of the chamber chieftains will be at the Government Center tonight to strongly encourage commissioners to scuttle the county manager’s recommended budget, which creates millions of dollars in […]

Diverging Diamond Double Take

The latest in roadway wizardry is soon to hit the Queen City. Cosmic Harry Launches Galactic Budget Rocket

There’s a little known law of Cardassian physics that states if a government bureaucrat travels fast enough along the space-time continuum, he can turn  a tax decrease into a tax increase. Mecklenburg County Manager Harry Jones hit warp speed with his $1.4 billion recommended budget, which simultaneously trims the tax rate by about a penny […]

Gov Bev Raiding Team BO Bench

Beverly Perdue is apparently bent on cobbling together remnants the campaign team that helped Barack Obama carry the state in his 2008 presidential run. And the NCGOP is eating it up as fodder to take shots at Perdue, as evidenced by the “congratulatory” message posted on the party’s website: NCGOP Congratulates Governor Perdue on Latest […]

For whatever it’s worth, just a friendly reminder: the national credit card expired. Today. This from the U.S Department of the Treasury: Today, the United States has reached the statutory debt limit. Secretary Geithner sent the following letter to Congress this morning alerting them to actions that have be taken to create additional headroom under […]

Hoosier Supremes Hose Fourth Amendment

Alternate header: Your home is no longer your castle. At least not in Indiana, according to a ruling last week from that state’s Supreme Court. This from the NWI Times: In a 3-2 decision, Justice Steven David writing for the court said if a police officer wants to enter a home for any reason or no […]

Federal Firebugs

The federal government has a longstanding history of rolling into local municipalities, usurping authority, generally making a mess of things, and burning bridges in the process. The latest case from Texas takes it to a new level. This from Reuters: Tom Edwards, the county attorney in rural Motley County east of Lubbock, said on Friday […]
