Says here that the Chamber of Commerce doesn’t think now is the time to be creating new taxes. Great, glad to hear it. So I’m certain all of the chamber chieftains will be at the Government Center tonight to strongly encourage commissioners to scuttle the county manager’s recommended budget, which creates millions of dollars in new taxes for more than 57 percent of households, and instead approve a plan that would reduce the tax burden on a majority of households.

The Charlotte Chamber wouldn’t support a sales tax increase, an official said Wednesday, worrying it could push businesses to other counties.

But Natalie English, senior vice president of public policy for the Chamber, says the group doesn’t think now is the time to create new taxes.

I get that English is talking about opposition to a new quarter-cent sales tax. But that logic should apply across the board to any new tax, right? Because if a quarter-cent bump in new sales tax would “push businesses to other counties,” surely a $700-a-year hit or more in new property taxes would do the same for homeowners, right?

So you’re with us on this one, right Natalie, and we can expect to see you and your chamber friends at the gov center tonight, telling Jenny & The Debts to abandon their madness and keep the property tax rate at revenue-neutral or lower, right?

Right?
