Stories written by Mark PellinAn award-winning journalist and former editor of The Rhinoceros Times in Charlotte, Pellin has been called everything from a misguided troglodyte to a professional agitator. He prefers the label of a realist, the guy in the crowd telling everybody that not only doesn’t the emperor have any clothes; he’s trying to steal ours.
Pellin has covered the Char-Meck scene for the better part of two decades, earning his fair share of fans and more than a few critics who wish he’d move to Nome, Alaska, and be eaten by wild bears.
When he’s not writing, he stays busy enjoying time with his wife and two kids. When he can break away for some R&R, he likes to fly fish (even if he doesn’t catch anything) and camp (even if it rains).

Recall that way back in 2005 the vaunted CMS Citizens Task Force unveiled what was at the time hailed as bold and sweeping recommendations for improving CMS operations and management. Chief among them was […]

Legislation that would outlaw the use of all but hands-free cell phones while driving is apparently drawing bipartisan support in the General Assembly, with the House slated to discuss the proposal this week. The penalty for driving and gabbing sans a hands-free device would be a $100 fine. Drivers could still use a hand-hand cell […]

The Mecklenburg Union Metropolitan Planning Organization paved the way this week for Charlotte’s streetcar project to roll down the tracks, voting to amend its long-term 2035 transportation plan to allow the streetcar to leapfrog other projects in order to secure federal funding. The MUMPO’s decision was the last hurdle that needed to be cleared for […]

Billions, that is, and it still had some alleged fiscal conservatives on their heels bemoaning what amounted to a drop in the bucket of much needed spending cuts. This from CNSNews: The national debt jumped by $72 billion on Tuesday even as the Republican-led U.S. House of Representatives passed a continuing resolution to fund the […]

Stealing a page from the county manager’s playbook, the city manager and police chief have apparently taken to treating the city council and the public like mushrooms: keep them in the dark and feed them crap. In this case, it takes the form of City Manager Curt Walton coming before council last month and explicitly […]

A contingent of Charlotte councilmembers and city staff is living large in the nation’s capital this week, soaking up lessons on how to grow government and spin the public at the annual National League of Cities Congressional City Conference. Charlotte taxpayers will likely shell out in excess of $15,000 for the five-day event, to include […]
