Stories written by Mark Pellin
An award-winning journalist and former editor of The Rhinoceros Times in Charlotte, Pellin has been called everything from a misguided troglodyte to a professional agitator. He prefers the label of a realist, the guy in the crowd telling everybody that not only doesn’t the emperor have any clothes; he’s trying to steal ours. Pellin has covered the Char-Meck scene for the better part of two decades, earning his fair share of fans and more than a few critics who wish he’d move to Nome, Alaska, and be eaten by wild bears. When he’s not writing, he stays busy enjoying time with his wife and two kids. When he can break away for some R&R, he likes to fly fish (even if he doesn’t catch anything) and camp (even if it rains).

Hypocrisy Taken To Task

By Sen. Rand Paul, naturally, who blisters President Obama with a scathing indictment of his handling of the war in Libya. This from The Hill: In a floor speech Wednesday, Paul introduced a motion to the Senate that would condemn Obama’s decision to attack military installations controlled by Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi without authorization from […]

The No Photo ID, Voter Photo ID Compromise

Well, that didn’t take long. Empowered with an overwhelming mandate from the people to govern with a rational, conservative bent, it’s taken the Republican majority in the NC General Assembly all of three months to scuttle the first semblance of rational conservatism. Not sure how else you can read the so-called compromise being pushed on […]

Europe’s Endgame To Save Mother Earth

Ban cars from London and other major cities across Europe, under the pretext of what the UK Telegraph tags as “a draconian EU masterplan.” The European Commission on Monday unveiled a “single European transport area” aimed at enforcing “a profound shift in transport patterns for passengers” by 2050. The plan also envisages an end to […]

Reval Appeals Avalanche And Looming Tax Hikes

New values delivered this week for commercial properties in Mecklenburg County that reflect significant increases across the board seem to directly contradict the county’s own dire forecast on how local markets were trending, giving rise to predictions for wholesale reval appeals and an increased possibility that a majority of homeowners will be walloped by a […]

Contract Balloons For Blue Line Extension

Shocking, isn’t it; would’ve never seen that coming. Charlotte Area Transit Systems is slated to ask the city council to adjust the preliminary engineering contract for the Blue Line Extension Light Rail Project. The adjustment? A mere $5 million bump. “The amount being requested is the culmination of various changes that have been determined necessary for […]

Sacrifice And Leadership

Or in the case of our absentee-landlord president, dancing the samba in Brazil while launching a hundred or so Tomahawk missiles on Libya. But, hey, he cut the trip short a whole two hours to focus on the war. Sacrifice. Leadership. This from CNSNews: As his trip to Latin America winds up in El Salvador […]
