More Violence At Vance

|

A lot more, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department statistics that show 61 arrests logged at the University City high school through February of the current school year, a staggering jump from only six arrests during the whole of the previous school year.

The most recent outburst of violence went down yesterday morning in the school cafeteria, when three Vance students were arrested for inciting a riot. During the melee, police had to use a TASER gun to subdue Donavan Meeks, 17, who was subsequently charged with disorderly conduct, inciting a riot, and resisting an officer. Also arrested were DaQuan Davidson, 19, charged with disorderly conduct and inciting a riot, and D’Aunte Connor, 17, charged with inciting a riot and damaging property.

It’s at least the third high-profile brawl in as many months that has landed Vance high school in headlines for violence. In January nearly a dozen students were arrested when a brawl erupted in the school cafeteria, drawing police to the scene. Less than a week later, another fight also drew police presence.

Throughout it all, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools officials have continued to insist there isn’t any correlation between systemic problems at Vance and the increasing violence, or that the violence is possibly gang-related. CMS’ official line? The skyrocketing violence is the result of off-campus disputes spilling into the school.

Nothing to see here; move along, children, but maybe take a detour around the school cafeteria.
