MeckGOP Hosting Inaugural Youth Summit

|

Growing up in New Hampshire, I was exposed firsthand to politics at a very young age.  When you live in a small state famous for playing an important roll in the Presidential Primary, it was hard to escape.  My first political memory was formed at about the age of 7 when then Vice President Bush visited my hometown of Wolfeboro on a campaign stop.  I remember all of us in our 2nd grade classroom created crayon drawings of flags and signs that read “Reagan! Reagan! Ra! Ra! Ra!” and then went down to the docks for the event.  (Apparently I was bred to be a Republican.)

The point here is that exposure to and participation in the political process at a young age wound up having a profound impact on my life.   I have, therefore, long been supportive of involving young people in politics in as “full immersion” an experience as can be given.

In my teen years, I remember being told all the time that I and my fellows were the “future of the Party”.  I always took, and still do, a different tack.   Youth are also part of the present Party and can have just as positive an influence on the outcome of an election as someone who is voting for the 25th time.  It’s up to us as adult activists to find ways for them to learn and contribute.

To that end, many thanks to the leadership of the Mecklenburg GOP for putting together it’s first ever “Youth Summit”.  The press release is below.

(Shameless plug coming in 3…2…1) Yours truly will be presenting a talk on grassroots activism on Tuesday and am very much looking forward to it.

Rising Ninth through Twelfth Graders across Mecklenburg County and the surrounding region are invited to participate in a free two-day event on July 26 and 27 during which they will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities such as history, economics, and local government seminars.

There will also be an opportunity for discussion with other like-minded youth from around the county, as well as the chance to meet with local elected Republican leaders. Speakers will include Charlotte City Councilman Warren Cooksey, MeckGOP Chair Gideon Moore, MeckGOP Vice Chair Patricia Murray, and a number of other county leaders and grassroots activists. The Summit will run from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. each day at the GOP Headquarters with lunch provided for the attendees.

The MeckGOP Youth Summit comes as part of an effort put forth by the MeckGOP to engage today’s youth in the political process and to raise up our next generation of leaders. The MeckGOP firmly believes that to see positive change in our Nation, we must look to America’s youth as instruments of change and as those who will be most constructive in activating their peers and communities to take action.

The MeckGOP strongly encourages local teenage activists to use the MeckGOP Youth Summit as an opportunity to get inspired, informed, and involved, and to encourage others to do the same!
