AC/DC Comics? UPDATE: The Gay Green Lantern
I guess when you have America’s first gay president – crowned on the cover of Newsweek, no less, with a multi-colored halo – it was only a matter of time until the first openly gay superhero followed.
That’s the direction DC Comics appears headed, with reports that one of its major characters is coming out of the closet. Or maybe the phone booth, as chatter seems to be favoring the man of steel as a likely candidate:
Could Superman be gay?
Honchos at Superman’s comic book home, DC Comics, said this weekend that one of their most identifiable (but as of yet unnamed) straight characters will soon be coming out of the closet, according to a report.
At the Kapow Comic Convention held last weekend in London, DC co-publisher Dan DiDio said the publisher would be reintroducing a previously existing character who would now be “one of our most prominent gay characters,” the website BleedingCool.com reports.
DC apparently backtracked on an earlier plan to introduce brand new LGBT characters, according to DC co-publisher Dan DiDo, opting instead to have an established superhero switch sexual orientation. One who “has evolved,” not unlike the character-in-chief currently occupying the White House.
As Senior VP Sales Bob Wayne explained, just like the President of the United States, the co-publisher’s policy on this “has evolved.”
And despite his best efforts to stem Dan’s wandering mouth, we also got the very strong impression that the death of Superman of Earth Two many not have been as final as portrayed…
I would’ve bet Robin the Boy Wonder a more likely candidate, not that there’s anything wrong with that, but maybe there wouldn’t have been much of a headline shocker on that front.
Any superhero predictions?
UPDATE: As noted by one of our always vigilant readers (h/t Skyler) it’s the Green Lantern who’s popped out of the closet. This from DC Comics:
Today, we are pleased to announce that the mystery about the identity of the character in question is over. Appearing in next week’s EARTH 2 #2, Alan Scott is the only Green Lantern of Earth 2. A team leader with a Type-A personality and an appetite for justice, Alan also happens to be homosexual. And while his origins won’t be shown in full detail until issue #3, we can tease that a traumatic event will serve as the catalyst for him assuming his superhero identity as The Green Lantern.
…
“I’m very proud to be introducing Alan Scott into DC COMICS-THE NEW 52,” said series writer James Robinson. “He was my favorite Golden Age character and one I’m very familiar with so I’m really excited to be updating him for a contemporary readership. However, I think old-time readers will be pleasantly surprised by how, in some ways, I’m trying to show the ‘classic’ Alan Scott at the same time. He’s still the same dynamic, heroic guy he was. He’s still the head of a media empire like he was in his prior version, but of course with the form of media changing and evolving with the times. And in many ways, his origin mirrors the original one also. Oh, and on Earth 2 there is only one Green Lantern, so Alan’s title is The Green Lantern. Alan’s sexuality is just one facet of him, along with his innate goodness, valor, charisma and skill at leadership that makes him the perfect man to wield the power of the green light in the world of Earth 2.”
