Both Nationally and right here in North Carolina, it seems the only thing separating the Rs from the Ds is gay rights and abortion. They both want to use tax policy to control the population, they both want to screw the little guy in favor of the Banks and other large corporations, they both wantonly trample the Rule of Law and the constitution, and, worst of all, from toll roads to health care, their “beliefs” — and their votes – openly go to the highest bidder.

Establishment types like Karl Rove and Lindsey Graham warn of the Republican Party’s impending “demographic death spiral” if the treasonous immigration bill does not pass. They fail to recognize that it is not demograhics that has the GOP confined to its deathbed – but in fact the cancer eating away at the party is caused by the Republican party’s descent into craven cronyism, which the establishment has openly wielded like a blunt instrument to beat the citizenry and even party loyalists into state of servile despair.

Here in North Carolina, Republicans seem intent not just on destroying the party, but the entire state. So far, the R’s have used their first majority in 100 years to run roughshod over liberty while stealing us blind on behalf of their corporate masters. Oh – but they made sure gay people cannot get married, proposed a state religion, introduced numerous anti-abortion bills, and have decided they are scientists who can set the education curriculum. So ‘the base’ should quit complaining and let the ‘big dogs’ run things, right? Trust them…you’ll love the toll roads once you start driving on them.

Some of the recent North Carolina legislature’s more stellar proposals have included:

A budget proposal that requires small businesses to pay license fees of $5,000 a year for C class corporations, and $750 a year for LLC’s and S class corporations — while large corporations (donors) like Duke Energy and Bank of America pay ZERO. These fees would have to paid even if the company made no money that year.

The party of low taxes also thinks it’s a good idea to not only eliminate the mortgage interest deduction, but to also slap a transfer tax on the sale of real estate! If that isn’t enough, they want to put extra taxes on every single service business in the state – that includes new taxes on everything from barber shops to attorneys to roofing to construction to charter boat fishing to lawn mowing by the neighborhood kid. They even think it’s a good idea to raise sales taxes on food and prescriptions! Businesses who refuse to collect the new service taxes, or who refuse to pay their business license fees can have their doors padlocked and be arrested by armed NC Revenue agents.Oh, but no need to worry that the Republicans are totally anti- business, they do love those businesses that know how to cough up the campaign cash – like banks and high interest lenders who just got (bought) a sweet deal – the ability to charge THIRTY PERCENT interest. The Republicans have not limited their great ideas to fiscal matters.

They have also proposed the following bits of awesomeness in governing:

A bill that would have allowed the state to create an official religion.

A bill that would make it a crime for FBI agents to enforce federal gun laws in North Carolina if the guns were made here and were not transported over state lines.

A bill that would levy a “poll tax” on families if their dependent registered to vote at college.

A bill that would let STATE lawmakers draw district lines for local school board elections.

A bill that would prevent teens getting treatment for substance abuse, mental illness or sexually transmitted diseases without parental agreement.

And the Republicans don’t just distrust teenagers – they also think it is the right of the state to prevent adults from being able to divorce for two years, with NO exceptions for domestic violence or abuse, and to ban women from showing their – gasp – nipples. Which I find interesting given their propensity for suckling on the teat of Corporations. I guess if it don’t taste like cash they are not interested…

Just as the immigration bill has nothing to do with helping the party woo immigrants and everything to do with helping Big Business procure cheap labor, the “death spiral” the Republicans find themselves in has nothing to do with the skin color of the electorate or with the “freeloading 47%.”

The death rattle now heard in the heartless chest of our once honorable party is payback from the many years of inhaling the toxic combination of xenophobia, corporatism, and mean-girl pettiness as exemplified by the rhetoric and legislation currently emanating from Raleigh.

However, there is one Republican bill I think I can get behind – a bill banning the “mentally incompetent” from voting. But only if it prevents these neanderthals from voting on any more of these disastrous bills.
