It’s Official: We Have Chosen Tyranny Over Liberty

That word’s been thrown around a lot in the last five years.  It’s been used as a scare tactic.  It’s been ridiculed.  It’s been used by both the important and the unimportant.  It’s been used to define on the one hand, and defend on the other, the times we are living in.

But few really know what it means.  When they hear it or see it most people conjure up images of poor, war-ravaged nations, ruled by vicious tin-pot dictators in a place far removed from the relative freedoms and safety of America.   But tyranny is not a destination or state of being.   You don’t wake up one day to find yourself living under tyranny.

Even fewer of us understand that tyranny cannot be avoided.  “Our guy” or “their guy” will both lead us to tyranny.  In fact, if you and I were elected tomorrow we would be leading the march toward tyranny.  In reality, as citizens we are, and always have been, participating in this same march.

So if tyranny is neither a destination nor relegated to backwater third world nations, what is it and why can’t it be avoided?

Well, to reverse the question, tyranny cannot be avoided simply because it is the eventual state of all governments.  Governments, once instituted into power, have one purpose: to perpetuate their own existence.

To this end, governments must continually (and if necessary, artificially) create additional, ever larger, ever more complex (or far-fetched) and more expensive reasons for their existence.

Otherwise the people would say, “You have completed your task.  We thank you.  You are now no longer needed.”

In short, governments must and will inevitably grow in size, power and scope regardless of leadership, regardless of need and regardless of the ability to fund that growth.

As a result the cost of funding the government must grow (higher taxes, higher deficits/debt, and devalued currencies) and the level of rule (oppression) over the people must grow, both of which destroy the purchasing power and liberties of the people.  It is no more complex than that.  In order to perpetuate their existence, all governments must and will lead their people into tyranny.  For this reason, under government rule, tyranny cannot be avoided.

To define tyranny, we must first realize what it is not.  Unlike the weary train passenger who jerks awake to find he’s arrived at the end of the line, having missed his stop hours ago, tyranny is not a destination in time or place that we wake to find ourselves in.

No, tyranny is a continuum of diminishing prosperity and liberty that is the natural result of governmental actions over time; it exists in any society where people choose to not govern themselves.

The Founders understood this.  They knew that simply by instituting a government they were introducing tyranny into the lives of the people.  They understood the risks and did everything they could to minimize that risk by limiting the powers of the government over the people.  This was the basis of the so-called ‘American Experiment’.   This nation, born of rebellion against tyranny itself, was created by a governing document founded in telling the government what it could NOT do instead of telling the people what they COULD or MUST do.  Coupled with an insistence on the Rule of Law, Private Property Rights, States’ Rights, and a (classical) liberal democracy, the Founders created a government that was defined by design and created for the purpose of thwarting the long march of tyranny.  They failed.

They failed for the very reasons I outlined above: Governments, once instituted, must grow at the expense of the people else the government will cease to exist.

In its earliest stages tyranny manifests itself through the subtle breakdown of the Rule of Law.

As I have reminded you over the past several years, the Rule of Law is defined in two parts;

1) All men are equal under the law (no one is above the law)

2) All men are afforded equal protection under the law (your protecting against majority (mob) rule)

This breakdown in the law, this willful violation of the people by their own government, is too often ignored (and more accurately stated as encouraged) by those who at that place and time in the continuum are seemingly (in their own minds) unaffected by, or in fact actually benefit from, tyranny’s progress.

Yet, as tyranny spreads more and more people are affected while fewer and fewer people benefit.  This of course forces the government to further oppress the people.  The people, seeing that their government has become lawless and immoral turn to lawlessness and immorality themselves.  Which we know becomes a death spiral for any society.  Tyranny, now growing at an exponential rate in a positive feedback loop, feeds on itself as the government and the people slowly die in its grasp.

The government, being the slave of tyranny, is powerless to stop the death spiral.  Ultimately, as throughout history, the people will rebel against tyranny.  Often, this leads the people to also rebel against their government.  And yet, if they are “successful”, and having cast off the chains of tyranny, the people – as guided by history – will once again choose not to govern themselves as free men, but to institute … a new government.

And in doing so, it becomes clear that We The People do not choose liberty.   We choose tyranny.

And that, is what we deserve.  And that is what we will get.

From Infowars:

Police arrested numerous Vietnam veterans during a vigil at a war memorial in New York City last night after the protesters refused to adhere to a 10pm curfew.

After the Park Service rejected the group’s application to hold a protest at the site, an all-night vigil was planned. The group argued that its first amendment rights superseded the 10pm curfew.

Photographs show veterans being handcuffed and loaded into paddy wagons.

From the Washington Examiner:

A planned immigration reform rally will take place on the National Mall on Tuesday even though the site is closed due to the government shutdown.

Organizers for the “Camino Americano: March for Immigration Reform” were spotted Monday setting up a stage and equipment on the National Mall for the rally which will take place on Tuesday.

Susana Flores, a spokesperson for the rally, confirmed for the Washington Examiner that the Park Service will allow the event to take place under the group’s rights granted by the First Amendment.
