DNC: A Big, Happy Picnic For NC

|

Despite the latest poll that shows Barack Obama trailing Mitt Romney by a 47-43% margin among likely voters in North Carolina, and unemployment here nipping 10 percent and near the worst in the nation; despite gasoline prices hitting a record high for Labor Day, the national debt about to hit $16 trillion, and Democrat voter registration floundering in the Tar Heel state while party operatives scramble to fill Bailout Stadium for The One’s big acceptance speech, MSNBC’s Chris Matthews was duly impressed with the celebratory mood at the DNC, as folks poured into uptown Charlotte for CarolinaFest.

“This is a Labor Day crowd, this is a picnic crowd,” Matthews jabbered from the MSNBC stage uptown Monday, during a guest appearance on the Martin Bashir Show, noting the difference between the crowds at the DNC and the ones he saw in Tampa for the RNC.

“Everybody here is having fun,” Matthews said of the uptown crowd. “I got the feeling at the Republican convention in Tampa that it was a business convention – down to business, very determined, almost grim.

“There’s a real exuberance here,” Matthews tingled of the uptown scene.

So revelers soaking up a free event waiting to hear an endless litany of speeches from Democrats promising them even more free stuff, as fiscal disaster looms on the horizon, is fantastic; a well-deserved grand time to be had on somebody else’s dime.

And Republicans wanting to get down to business, discuss the difficult choices that need to be made to save us from driving off a fiscal cliff, and offer solutions to avoid the calamity? Why that, of course, merits derision and scorn from progressives leaning forward into the abyss.

Expect plenty more of it to come in the days ahead. But for now, reality ~ it ain’t no picnic:
