Back to Basics: Activism vs Rallies

|

February 23 was the so-called “Day of Resistance.”   Given the lack of coverage of it, the event was anything but a success.   The Obama compliant media of course ignores any conservative event, unless it is too big to ignore.  But even the conservative media, such as Drudge, Breitbart and WND have no coverage of the event.

Rallies are fun events.  People like them.  They are very beneficial for the organizers; however, they accomplish almost nothing.  Anyone remember the rallies of 2009?  Did they stop Obamacare or the other parts of the Obama agenda?

We are in a desperate fight to save our 2nd Amendment rights.  If rallies won’t do it, what will?

The answer is simple.  We go back to the basics of grass roots activism.

How do we do this?

Grass roots activism can be summed up with one simple phrase:  numbers count.

Saturday, while the small rallies were going on, the Washington Post breathlessly announced the news they have long waited for.  A group of “bipartisan” Republicans was caving on gun control.  Led by RINO Tom Coburn and featuring some of the usual cast of characters such as John McCain and the remaining sellout sister, Susan Collins, they have agreed to require all but universal background checks.

Rallies are not going to stop this idiocy by the squishy Republicans.  Neither will calls to send in a million dollars to groups for vague purposes.

Grass roots activism can turn the tide.

How?

It is simple.  Wear these Senators’ phone lines out and if this bill passes the Senate, wear your Congressman’s phone out.

If you are not on a first name basis with your Congressman, you are doing something wrong.  Congressmen and Senators are paid to know people.  It is their job and if you show up at the party’s political events and at their constituent meetings, they will get to know you on a first name basis.  If you can go to DC, stop by and visit your Senator’s office.  Most of them have constituent events.  Make sure they know who you are.

Get your neighbors and friends involved.  We all have email lists.  How many times do you pass along some story or joke along via email to a list of ten or twenty friends and family members?

Instead, send them updates about what is going on with the 2nd Amendment fight and put the phone numbers of your Senators and Congressman on the email.

Ask them to call.

While we are seeing the retreat of the squishy Republicans on this issue, there are a lot of swing state Democrats who are sweating this issue.  A couple of them have already decided not to run in 2014 because of it.

They can be pressured, even if the worthless RINOs like John McCain fold.

This is the essence of grassroots activism.

Here is a secret a lot of groups do not want you to know.  Real grassroots activism costs very little.   Making an issue go viral often costs nothing.   Emails to friends and neighbors cost you nothing.  Calls and emails to your Representatives offices cost you nothing.

Congressmen and Senators pay attention.  Even on issues like gun control, Senators and Congressmen do not get that many calls.  They pay attention when they start getting a lot of calls because unless they are from a very liberal state or district, they cannot afford to ignore those calls.

One other very effective technique is a well-written business letter that is faxed to their office.  Mail now takes weeks to reach a Senator or Congressman because of the security measures it has to go through.  Faxes do not.

Real grassroots activism is not about splashy rallies.  It is about winning.

Winning does not cost a lot of money.  Winning is simply about doing activism right.

You don’t need a group nor do you need a leader to be a grassroots activist.  If you are outraged by the assaults on your 2nd Amendment rights, then tomorrow call your Senators and Congressman and tell them.  Email your friends and get them to do the same thing.

Let’s make our Representatives in Washington hear us.

Remember, when Congress and the Senate feel the heat, they will see the light.

Thanks to everyone for your support,

Sincerely,

Ronnie Long – President
