WWJD? Support Huge Bond Package, According to WBT’s Chadwick
By Sharon Hudson
In an interview with Charlotte Democratic Mayor Anthony Foxx which aired May 16th on WBT Radio, WBT Commentator and Pastor David Chadwick called for citizens to vote for the estimated $198.6 million bond package which may appear on the November ballot. The package would include $10 million for affordable housing, or about 5 percent of the total amount.
After gushing about the $200 million Nascar Museum and Hall of Fame, and the Bobcats Arena, Foxx and Chadwick cited figures that estimate as many as 3000 children in Mecklenburg County are homeless.
“God wants little children and people to have roofs over their heads, food in their stomachs and clothing on their backs,” said Chadwick. “It’s inexcusable for us not to be addressing {homelessness} as a city.”
This was said during the hour long interview, in which Foxx described his goals as Mayor of Charlotte especially during this economically challenging time of double-digit unemployment and a county facing massive shortfalls for both the current-year and coming-year budgets.
Foxx said there are things he wants to accomplish related to education, transportation, and government. “We cannot afford to let this moment pass without making some radically different decisions about how we deal with those issues,” he said.
“The faith community should be your left and right hands in a lot of what you’re trying to accomplish,” Chadwick told Mayor Foxx. “I would love to be a part of helping you in any way that I can because that is the heart of God.”
When discussing the differences between Republicans and Democrats, Foxx described republicans as being for, “Lower taxes, less government, and freedom from government.” Chadwick said about Democrats that, “We’re the servant of the people, trying for the best of the whole, rather than just a few who are seemingly the rich ones trying to control everything.”
At the end of the interview, he offered Foxx the chance to address Charlotte citizens directly, and Foxx took the opportunity to campaign for the bonds: “We are debating on the city council about whether to increase the housing trust fund bond, and if we do it will be on the ballot in November, and so I would just ask folks to really search yourselves and to find it within yourself to support whatever housing bond we have because my intention is to try to help kids that are homeless.”
Chadwick added, “And that means, folks, put a check mark on that particular endeavor because it does speak wisely and widely for what our city is and for where we want be.”
