Stories written by Mark Pellin
An award-winning journalist and former editor of The Rhinoceros Times in Charlotte, Pellin has been called everything from a misguided troglodyte to a professional agitator. He prefers the label of a realist, the guy in the crowd telling everybody that not only doesn’t the emperor have any clothes; he’s trying to steal ours. Pellin has covered the Char-Meck scene for the better part of two decades, earning his fair share of fans and more than a few critics who wish he’d move to Nome, Alaska, and be eaten by wild bears. When he’s not writing, he stays busy enjoying time with his wife and two kids. When he can break away for some R&R, he likes to fly fish (even if he doesn’t catch anything) and camp (even if it rains).

Wilson Booted As Mecklenburg DSS Director

Amidst the swirl of news, headlines and distractions surrounding the DNC (wholly coincidental, I’m sure), Mecklenburg County Manager Harry Jones announced today that Mary Wilson has been “terminated” as director of the Department of Social Services. Sources say Wilson was given the option to step down from her post, or be fired. Apparently, she preferred […]

The Incredible Shrinking DNC

First it was supposed to be four days with a huge shindig at Charlotte Motor Speedway, which got trimmed to three days with a parade uptown. Now the DNC confirms that it’s moving Barack Obama’s acceptance speech from Bank of America Stadium to Time Warner Cable Arena. Because of weather concerns. As in an 80% […]

DNC Highlights Record-Setting Administration

Milestones we’ve reached as the DNC hits its stride and Barack Obama prepares to accept his party’s nomination and explain why he deserves another four years: National Debt exceeds a record $16 trillion, an increase of about $5.6 trillion since Obama took office. The charts, via The Weekly Standard, paint the picture: U.S. Government Debt […]

Blink And Miss It

Mayor Anthony Foxx’s highly touted and ballyhooed speech at the DNC, that is, which lasted all of nearly four minutes. In all fairness, Foxx has probably been too busy lo these many months to spend much time prepping for the biggest political stage of his career: passing a city budget that tackles priorities without hiking […]

Special Announcement From The DNC

“The government is the only thing we all belong to…” Seriously. But credit where credit is due; at least they’re finally coming clean with their agenda: A common, shared belief in and struggle for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? LOL – it’s government that binds us all.

Gov Bev’s DNC Media Roll

Never mind that she has the lowest approval ratings of any governor in the country; the DNC in its infinite wisdom has opted to have Beverly Perdue, last seen stonewalling reporters while running cover for the local Democrat Party’s riches of embarrassment, scandal and disgrace, join the uptown party instead of locking her in a […]

Team BO Campaign Rewind

If the tone and tenor of the DNC feels a bit like a déjà vu all over again, there’s a reason for it. Actually, several reasons, all stale and sour, running on empty rhetoric and unfilled promises; but don’t take my word for it. Ask The One; he’ll tell you, as the latest from the […]

DNC: A Big, Happy Picnic For NC

Despite the latest poll that shows Barack Obama trailing Mitt Romney by a 47-43% margin among likely voters in North Carolina, and unemployment here nipping 10 percent and near the worst in the nation; despite gasoline prices hitting a record high for Labor Day, the national debt about to hit $16 trillion, and Democrat voter registration […]

Mitt Mash

There’s a reason Mitt Romney didn’t delve into any policy specifics or reach for any grandiose themes during his RNC acceptance speech; actually, there are several reasons, but the main one is the simplest: he didn’t need to. All Romney needed was to echo the same message that the man he’s trying to replace delivered […]
