Wilson Booted As Mecklenburg DSS Director
Amidst the swirl of news, headlines and distractions surrounding the DNC (wholly coincidental, I’m sure), Mecklenburg County Manager Harry Jones announced today that Mary Wilson has been “terminated” as director of the Department of Social Services.
Sources say Wilson was given the option to step down from her post, or be fired. Apparently, she preferred the latter. County officials say Wilson has indicated she plans to appeal the decision to terminate, and has 10 working days to make it official.
The decision to oust Wilson came “after multiple meetings with members of the County’s executive team throughout her employment,” according to a county news release, which seems to indicate some long-simmering issues.
Wilson, Mecklenburg County’s first African-American female DSS director, was appointed to the post in July 2008. She was being paid $151,410 this year, according to the county.
