Stories written by Mark PellinAn award-winning journalist and former editor of The Rhinoceros Times in Charlotte, Pellin has been called everything from a misguided troglodyte to a professional agitator. He prefers the label of a realist, the guy in the crowd telling everybody that not only doesn’t the emperor have any clothes; he’s trying to steal ours.
Pellin has covered the Char-Meck scene for the better part of two decades, earning his fair share of fans and more than a few critics who wish he’d move to Nome, Alaska, and be eaten by wild bears.
When he’s not writing, he stays busy enjoying time with his wife and two kids. When he can break away for some R&R, he likes to fly fish (even if he doesn’t catch anything) and camp (even if it rains).
Breathe easy, citizen; Charlotte’s powers-that-be have deemed it permissible for law-abiding folks to walk their dogs during what was announced this week will be the city’s first round of officially designated “extraordinary events” – the upcoming shareholders meetings for Bank of America and Duke Energy, along with uptown’s Speed Street and July Fourth celebration. Recall […]

Republican primary elections are typically no-drama affairs for incumbent Mecklenburg Commissioner Bill James, who hasn’t faced any serious opposition in more than a decade for the seat he’s held for eight terms representing the heavily suburban District 6. This year is proving an exception, as the oft-outspoken and controversial James squares off against Ed Driggs, […]

Having already shortened the Democratic National Convention from four to three days and moved The One’s big speech to Bank of America stadium where the party can pimp out luxury box suites for extra loot, it seems the convention’s host committee is still struggling for cash. The solution: Get big labor unions to help cover […]

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg school board on Tuesday night unanimously approved a four-year contract for superintendent-in-waiting Heath Morrison, who will rake in a total compensation package of more than $300,000 a year. Is WBT actively trying to drive away listeners, or trying to draw a different set of listeners? Don’t know; but the bottom line is that yet another talented, wickedly funny and, maybe most important, local talk show is leaving the airwaves after management decides to not renew his contract. This from WCNC: WBT-AM radio host […]

The decision came on the heels of news earlier in the morning that one of the three other finalists for the job – Memphis Superintendent Kriner Cash – had abruptly withdrawn from the running.
