Team BO Taps Unions For DNC Bailout In Queen City
Having already shortened the Democratic National Convention from four to three days and moved The One’s big speech to Bank of America stadium where the party can pimp out luxury box suites for extra loot, it seems the convention’s host committee is still struggling for cash. The solution: Get big labor unions to help cover the tab. This from Bloomberg:
President Barak Obama’s political advisers are pressing labor unions to contribute to the Democratic convention in September to cover a fundraising shortfall resulting from their self-imposed ban on corporate donations, according to two people familiar with the matter.
Democratic officials gave representatives of the major U.S. unions, including the AFL-CIO, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and the United Auto Workers, a tour of the convention sites in Charlotte, North Carolina, April 23 in advance of a request for donations, according to the two people, who requested anonymity because they weren’t authorized to discuss internal strategy.
So far, the host committee has only raised half of its $36.6 million nut. A monster of a cash problem, as Bloomberg notes, is the Democrat National Committee’s self-imposed $100,000 cap on corporate and individual donations to help foot the bill for the convention.
When Democrats threw their big party in Denver four years ago, donations of less than $100,000 accounted for only 5 percent of the fundraising push, according to Bloomberg, with almost three-fourths of the funding coming from contributions of more than $250,000 and a quarter of the loot from a dozen donors who gave between $1 million and $1.7 million.
Absent the big donors, Big Labor is being asked to fill the void. And, hey, why not? It’s not like they don’t already own the Democrat Party.
Any bets on how this will impact out-of-state union labor swooping into town for the DNC. And just for kicks, recall the multiple assurances from Mayor Anthony Foxx and the Democrat-controlled Charlotte City Council that local taxpayer dollars would never be used to help fill any DNC funding shortfalls.
Um, OK; let’s see how that plays out if Big Labor balks at ponying up major loot to help pay for a convention held in a right-to-work state, and Obama doesn’t reverse course and lift the cap on big-money corporate donations.
