Stories written by Mark PellinAn award-winning journalist and former editor of The Rhinoceros Times in Charlotte, Pellin has been called everything from a misguided troglodyte to a professional agitator. He prefers the label of a realist, the guy in the crowd telling everybody that not only doesn’t the emperor have any clothes; he’s trying to steal ours.
Pellin has covered the Char-Meck scene for the better part of two decades, earning his fair share of fans and more than a few critics who wish he’d move to Nome, Alaska, and be eaten by wild bears.
When he’s not writing, he stays busy enjoying time with his wife and two kids. When he can break away for some R&R, he likes to fly fish (even if he doesn’t catch anything) and camp (even if it rains).
News about the school board pondering trips to Reno, Nev., and Memphis, Tenn., to check out the hometown digs of two superintendent candidate finalists got me thinking about the mother of all GovCo junkets that has seemingly, pardon the pun, flown under the radar of late: It’s nearly time for city councilmembers, county commissioners and […]

As surely as you can count on the sun rising, you can bank that the perpetual money pit calling itself Charlotte Mecklenburg Utility Department will request and receive an annual fee hike for water and sewer bills. CMUD is at it again, with officials this week lamenting that an average rate increase of 6 percent is […]

And that headline, unfortunately, should be taken quite literally. The Obama administration’s Department of Agriculture is shoveling out $5 million to build a “biogas anaerobic digester,” which is a fancy way of saying something that uses cow manure to help heat an ethanol plant. Pure BS, in other words; this from the Washington Examiner: Western […]

Corporate welfare isn’t just for banana republics the likes of which councilmembers routinely establish in the Queen City, doling out your hard-earned money to multi-million dollar corporations and making a mockery of any notion of a competitively level free market. The give-aways are endemic and, dare I say, widespread enough to envelope the considerable girth […]

Big ups to PunditHouse columnist Jeff Katz, who for the second year in a row won the Associated Press award for Best Talk Show in Boston. In addition to taking the honors for best talk show, a special Veteran’s Day broadcast of The Jeff Katz Show live from The Fisher House (on the grounds of the […]

If there was ever any question about whether the school board would pass the district’s proposed $1.2 billion-plus budget buster tonight, question no more. CMS’ platinum-plated PR department has sent word from on high that it’s already a done deal. This from a media release distributed yesterday: Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education meeting (Government Center, Meeting […]

In a classy and emotional speech, delivered with the historic town of Gettysburg, PA, as a backdrop, Rick Santorum today announced he was suspending his presidential campaign. Santorum started his presser with an acknowledgement that the fragile health of his daughter, Bella, prompted him to reassess the status of his campaign and how continuing it […]

After skirting open meeting laws and lurking in seculsion at the airport to interview prospective candidates for the high-flying gig of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools superintendent, the Board of Education today announced three finalists to trot around town over the coming days in meetings and forums with the public and schools officials: Long-time CMS administrator Ann Clark, […]

That would be Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who blew into town last week for some photo opps, a fancy dinner, and some shameless vote-pandering to the Hispanic community, all while gushing about Charlotte’s “energy” and “dynamism.” Villaraigosa was all smiles and spin for the cameras here, but his absolutely abysmal performance of late out […]

… it deserves at least passing mention when a Bulldog named Bubba takes the Masters into a playoff and pulls an appropriately ludicrous shot out of his bag to win the coveted green jacket. Whether you love or loathe golf, Watson’s backstory and recent history make this one memorable and more than a little cool: […]
