Stories written by Mark Pellin
An award-winning journalist and former editor of The Rhinoceros Times in Charlotte, Pellin has been called everything from a misguided troglodyte to a professional agitator. He prefers the label of a realist, the guy in the crowd telling everybody that not only doesn’t the emperor have any clothes; he’s trying to steal ours. Pellin has covered the Char-Meck scene for the better part of two decades, earning his fair share of fans and more than a few critics who wish he’d move to Nome, Alaska, and be eaten by wild bears. When he’s not writing, he stays busy enjoying time with his wife and two kids. When he can break away for some R&R, he likes to fly fish (even if he doesn’t catch anything) and camp (even if it rains).

Third World Banking In Queen City

The controversial micro-loan lender Grameen America is getting ready to hit Charlotte taxpayers up for a permanent loan – a.k.a. subsidy grant – of $200,000. A local organizing committee is already raising funds to launch a Grameen America branch in Charlotte and says it needs the grant largess to help fill its revolving loan pool, […]

Happy Constitution Day

I’d like to still be able to celebrate this day four, eight years from now. Vote like it matters; because it does.

Media Matters Grasping For Straws

You know liberals are on the run when the MSM picks up on any and every gaffe by conservative candidates, using words as weapons to paint them as nut jobs; that’s expected, par-for-the-course politics. But the latest O’Donnell bashing from the ultra-leftist Media Matters is a stretch. This from POLITICO: The trickle of media hits […]

A Trojan Horse For CMS

Remember a few years back when the Board of Education approved a new anti-bullying policy for CMS, when Larry Gauvreau and Kaye McGarry voted against it because they said it was being used as a way to gain a foothold for promoting and advancing a pro-homosexual agenda in classrooms. Gauvreau and McGarry were lambasted as […]

Tea Party Bags Big Wins

Again. This time in Delaware and New York, where upset wins by insurgent candidates in Republican primaries have the GOP ruling class with its collective panties in a wad. The MSM is also approaching meltdown mode, jumping on the bandwagon to echo party pronouncement’s that Christine O’Donnell’s victory in Delaware spells certain doom for a […]

City Hall Puppet Masters

In case there was any doubt about who is actually in charge down at City Hall, this should clear things up nicely. Hint: it ain’t the potted plants sitting behind the council dais. No, that would be city staff chieftains Curt “We’ll get back to you on that, councilman” Walton and Mac “Give me my […]

Hizzoner Chutzpah

Get a load of Mayor Anthony Foxx smacking down a group of boosters who showed up at city council’s Monday night dinner meeting to do a little cheerleading for the north Meck commuter rail line. “I’m growing increasingly irritated with conversation I’m hearing about whether Charlotte considers the north corridor a priority,” Foxx scolded before […]

Democrats On The Run

Taking a page from the Vilma Leake campaign playbook, House Democrats up for reelection are increasingly dodging voters, scuttling public appearances, and keeping tightly guarded wraps on their events calendars. This from POLITICO: But a year after tea party protesters disrupted their town hall meetings — and with control of the House hanging in the […]

Quality Of Life Down, City Manager Pay Up

Call it a case of bad timing and even worse judgment. Shortly after receiving a report Monday night that showed quality of life ratings have slipped for seven neighborhood areas, sinking them into the dreaded “challenged” category, the city council approved giving City Manager Curt Walton a sweet pay hike. Walton scored an annual compensation package […]
