Rotten Bananas
What does the Tea Party and Occupy Charlotte have in common? Crony Capitalism as a legitimate target, and one has to look no further than our own backyard for an example. State and local government representatives, along with their compliant bureaucrats, gave or obligated $22 million to Chiquita Brands to entice them to move their headquarters to Charlotte.
There is quite a bit wrong with this abuse of government authority and it starts with the transfer of funds from the poorest taxpayer to the well-paid executives of Chiquita, where the CEO made $7.7 million in 2009. I say it this way because in a reasonable world, the executives would not be making more than 150 times what the lowest paid person in the company makes. Further, profits would go to the stockholders, not the managers; but let’s be realistic, the abuses of management capitalism is why Occupy Somewhere exists in the first place.
Then there is the problem of giving taxpayer funds to any corporation. Why would we do that? The answer is: We, the taxpayers, wouldn’t. The reason it happens is because of who is actually in control of our government. Which is the reason the Tea Party came into existence, because government, in either the hands of the Democrats or Republicans, has abused its authority. The Tea Party would have government authority reduced, so these type things do not happen.
So what we see is that the Occupy Movement and the Tea Party are two sides of the same coin. One sees the problem as business, the other as government. In fact, in crony capitalism and management capitalism, the problem is the abuse of power.
So the latest story in this particular episode continues. We now have the Chiquita Brands executives getting paid to move, with your money. All in all not a bad trick, if you can pull it off. The taxpayers of North Carolina and Mecklenburg County, in being forced to give their money to Chiquita by their elected representatives – the DemoPublicans – have actually donated to the moving expenses of the highest paid executives.
This is going on even while some of the taxpayers are having difficulty finding jobs, making their house payments, and are possibly upside down on their mortgages.
DemoPublicans, Crony Capitalists and Management Capitalists are the problem. The Tea Party and the Occupy Movement should realize their concerns about issues of the abuse of power are the same and join forces.
