Stories written by Mark Pellin
An award-winning journalist and former editor of The Rhinoceros Times in Charlotte, Pellin has been called everything from a misguided troglodyte to a professional agitator. He prefers the label of a realist, the guy in the crowd telling everybody that not only doesn’t the emperor have any clothes; he’s trying to steal ours. Pellin has covered the Char-Meck scene for the better part of two decades, earning his fair share of fans and more than a few critics who wish he’d move to Nome, Alaska, and be eaten by wild bears. When he’s not writing, he stays busy enjoying time with his wife and two kids. When he can break away for some R&R, he likes to fly fish (even if he doesn’t catch anything) and camp (even if it rains).

The Best Debate Nobody Saw

That would be the one that didn’t focus on Big Bird, binders, and bayonets; the one where candidates, instead, held forth on trifling matters like federal laws that allow for the indefinite detention of American citizens without charge or trial. What? You didn’t see that debate? Join the crowd. I don’t have any official numbers, […]

Queen City DNC: Broken Promises And Loads Of Debt

Despite repeated assurances from party leaders that fundraising for the Democratic National Convention would meet its budget, coupled with endless promises and pledges to steer clear of corporate cash and lobbyist loot, reports filed with the Federal Election Commission show the Queen City bash came up woefully short on both fronts. More to the point, […]

Roasted And Toasted

The One and the other one took a quasi break from the campaign trail to yuk it up and trade a few barbs at the annual Al Smith Dinner, a white-tie shindig at New York’s Waldorf-Astoria hotel that raises money for Catholic charities in honor of former New York Gov. Al Smith, the first Catholic […]

Doubling Down On Dumb

“I mean, I had a friend who said, ‘You don’t just pick the winners and losers, you pick the losers.’ This is not the kind of policy you want to have if you want to get American energy secure.” ~ Mitt Romney, during the first Presidential debate, lambasting the Obama administration for doling out billions […]

Ready, Set…Vote!

The Big One is still a few weeks away, but one-stop early voting kicks off today for folks so inclined. Think of it as fast food for democracy. On that note, is it just a coincidence that early voting starts on the same day that the City of Charlotte’s Solid Waste Services Department kicks off […]

A Dose Of Funny

OK ~ a double dose, actually. “… we took a concerted effort to go out and find women who had backgrounds that could be qualified to become members of our cabinet. I went to a number of women’s groups and said, “Can you help us find folks,” and they brought us whole binders full of women.” […]

An Alternate Universe Of Uptown Endorsements

I spent a large part of the last month recovering from a surgery post-op regime that left me floating through a hydrocodone haze, frequently unable to discern reality from drug-induced stupor. When the pain meds finally cleared my system, I thought I was good to go. So imagine my shock when I read the uptown paper’s […]

Saturday Night House Party

Send us a link with your favorite tunes and vids (editor@pundithouse.com) and we’ll work them into the mix: Kicking things off with a little something from PH commentator Groucho, who forwards “a message from the ’60s to Obama and his executive orders.” ~

Prayers For The Cooksey Family

This one hurts, and Mecklenburg County is diminished by the loss. Commissioner Neil Cooksey died Wednesday after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. In a political era often scarred by bitter partisan divides, Cooksey, a Republican, was the rare breed who was able to strive for consensus and understanding while staying true to his conservative […]
