CRVA Whitewash?

|

The Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority’s board of directors has handpicked PricewaterhouseCoopers to serve as an “independent advisor in support of the Board’s own internal audit, review and assessment of the CRVA’s operating policies and procedures and organizational structure,” according to a memo sent to Mayor Anthony Foxx and Charlotte City Council.

Say what? How does what was initially sold as having a consultant perform an independent review of the CRVA morph into having a consultant oversee the CRVA’s internal review of the CRVA, last seen squirming under yet another controversy?

This from the council memo:

Consultants from the Hospitality and Leisure practice of PwC [PricewaterhouseCoopers] will provide the Board with industry background and insight regarding major operational and organizational issues, relative to the other similar organizations throughout the industry, which issues may be contributing to challenges facing the CRVA.

PwC will research historical and other documents and participate in discussions with CRVA staff and Board members concerning operating practices and management structure going forward.  The research and discussions will include a review of the current relationship of the CRVA and the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA).

The consultant’s services, slated to run from May 5 through June 2, will be funded by the CRVA budget, at a maximum amount of $25,000 plus expenses. So not only will the CRVA essentially be reviewing itself, it will handsomely pay the consultant charged with overseeing and facilitating the process of the CRVA’s review of the CRVA. But not to worry; there will be oversight.

The CRVA Board has established an Operations Review Committee to work closely with the PwC [PricewaterhouseCoopers] consultants throughout this process. The Committee is charged with establishing courses of action for possible revisions to operating policies, procedures and organizational structure. Representatives of the Committee will also meet with representatives of the CIAA board to review the policies of the relationship going forward and to ensure that Charlotte continues to host a vibrant and successful tournament for the Association.

The members of the watchdog Operations Review Committee charged with ensuring a fair and impartial audit of the policies and procedures approved by the CRVA board of directors and carried out by CRVA staff? CRVA board honchos, one and all, to include Vice Chairman Vi Lyles,Treasurer Joe Hallow, Secretary Geoff Durboraw, and members Vinay Patel, Paul Jamison, Mike McGuire, and Anthony Lindsey.

This will end well. For the CRVA, of course.
