N.C. Jobless Rate Highest In 34 Years

|

Despite cherry talk from Gov. Bev Perdue about government-driven, job creation plans and the deployment of new small business commissions, committees and sub-committees feverishly spinning bureaucratic wheels to put North Carolina back to work, the state’s unemployment rate took another hit in January, increasing from 10.9 to 11.1 percent with more than a half-million residents listed as unemployed.

And that’s the good news. Add in folks who have simply given up looking for work, who aren’t calculated into the unemployment rate, and the number climbs by 50,000 to 100,000. January’s 11.1 percent jobless rate was the highest North Carolina has recorded since 1976, and marked the tenth consecutive month that it’s topped 10 percent.

The dismal numbers can mean only one thing: Time for Gov. Bev to schedule an emergency press conference to announce the creation of an Executive Blue Ribbon Committee On Joblessness.
