Tracking Down Library Scofflaws
Regional branches – North County, South County, University City, Freedom, Morrison, and Independence – will be open Monday to Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and closed Friday and Sunday.
Community branches – Carmel, Cornelius, Davidson, Hickory Grove, Matthews, Mint Hill, Myers Park, Mountain Island, Plaza Midwood, Scaleybark, Steele Creek, Sugar Creek, and West Boulevard – will be open Monday to Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and closed Thursday and Sunday.
Specialty branches CheckIt Outlet and Belmont Center will be open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and closed Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday. The Beatties Ford Road branch, which is currently under renovation, will be open Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and closed Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.
The library trustees settled on the scaled back schedules and operating hours for all 24 branches in the system, after an earlier decision to shut down 12 branches sparked wholesale community backlash.
In addition to the truncated schedule, the system is laying off up to 84 employees – down from an original proposal to cut 148 positions – and will implement salary cuts ranging from 5 percent for frontline workers to up to 20 percent for library director Charles Brown, who pocketed more than $170,000 last year. The library also plans reductions in services and programs, such as computer training, book clubs, and children’s storytimes, and has eliminated its budget for purchasing new books.
