Accused Intellectual Property Thief Lands Super Job
So I’m in the kitchen washing some dishes yesterday and the TV’s on and I hear that some guy named Bacots had been hired as superintendent of Durham Public Schools.
Wash another dish. Heard the name again. Bacots?
Couldn’t be, I thought. So I go into the living room and there he is on the TV screen. Eric Becoats: former assistant superintendent of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, until he resigned shortly after being reprimanded for using CMS materials, time and personnel for personal gain.
If you’re relatively new to Charlotte-Mecklenburg or, apparently, a member of the Durham School Board, you might not know about Becoats. Back in 2003, he was staying busy on the public dime basically running his personal consulting business out of his CMS Ed Shed office, while marketing the district’s so-called “Choice Plan” to school systems in other states and pocketing the loot.
In the proud tradition of CMS accountability and responsibility, Becoats was slapped on the wrist, suspended for one day, and kindly asked to repay the school system about $4,000. He resigned a few months later and snagged a gig with University Park Baptist Church, before being hired as chief of staff for Guilford County Schools.
Now he’s superintendent of Durham Public Schools.
Unbelievable.
