So libraries, parks, social services and schools are facing massive cuts and layoffs and the braintrust in the county manager’s office decides it’s a good idea to blow close to $3,000 buying five new Apple iPads. Wonderful.
The official line – shocker here – is that spending more will ultimately save more, in this case by reducing costs for dead-tree products used to compile agendas and information packets for commissioners meetings. The county offers an example of a recent meeting where it cost more than $500 to copy agenda packets.
Almost makes sense, if commissioners didn’t already have some alternate way to view the information. But they do – laptop computers. Most commissioners, in fact, have already gone paperless, but the county keeps churning out paper agendas, which are usually summarily discarded into recycle bins.
The five lucky gamers in the county manager’s office are currently testing the new iPads to determine if they’d be an efficient tool for commissioners to use, before going out and blowing through thousands of more dollars purchasing enough of the whiz-bang gizmos to equip the whole board.
New iPads. It’s for the children.
